The aircraft seen yesterday at Manston belongs to Empost. Empost is a wholly owned subsidiary of Emirates Corporation for Commercial Postal Services.

Has the Border Inspection Post at Manston been approved now ?

If so all they need is a proper livestock ramp.

The Airbus will be back for more horses this week. I'm upgrading my cargo forecast for October to 4,100 tons.

Question al

lets keep to airport issues, its a joke ,has anyone out there got any gossip to share. instead of this constance sniping at each other .Is there connection between the green houses and the airport .could it be flying their produce around the world, creating 500 jobs . A lot of green houses. Means a lot of produce .a lot of cargo?,

Mighty Bus

Anyway......back to aviation matters

If your "mighty bus" is a 380....the runway at EGMH/MSE should be able accomodate it (touch & go's)..........the taxiways no.......well not yet anyway. And you'd be made very welcome.

Good point. This is the huge glasshouse development just down the road from Manston, the Fresca Group's joint collaboration with Dutch company Rainbow Growers. Each of the seven greenhouses will be the size of 10 premiership football pitches, the first will start producing by next Autumn. If I were in Matt Clarke's shoes I'd be banging on their door to see what I could do for them.

no matter how much the fuel price increases, bringing fresh veg from africa will continue because its a backload, the option is fly the aircraft back north empty and that really is not a smart move

The greenhouses are to produce salad vegetables for DOMESTIC consumption.

That's not what Christopher Mack the Fresca Group chairman led me to believe when we spoke last week.

The whole reason they're building them is that the costs of importing food by air are rising so fast and the supermarkets want a domestic option all year round. Not true.

The sort of vegetables grown under glass in the Uk would not affect air cargo, but could hit growers in spain, and comes in by road.

The sort of stuff that comes in by air is of high value, with a big mark up in supermarket.

Kent is already full of commercial greenhouse projects, and has hundreds of square miles of open farmland, all within serviceable distance of Manston Airport.

However, the information hitherto supplied on this forum is that Manston exports very little fresh produce - perhaps none.

I am sceptical of seven new greenhouses making any difference.

Believe it or not you are at least partially right.

I believed the Virginia flights would go ahead.

I believed Kent Escapes would expand a little - it would now appear they are contracting.

I don't believe all this hogwash about significant long term cargo growth - although I might have done five years ago.

7 glasshouses EACH the size of 10 premier league football pitches. It's a huge area and there will be a huge surplus, it's certainly not going to end up on the Council tip.

Glasshouses

I always like to look at the scale of numbers quoted in relation Manston. Manstonman has kindly stated that there will be 7 glasshouses each the size of 10 premier league football pitches. I have no reason to doubt his post especially since he has quoted a source for it. So here goes.

A football pitch must be between 100 yds and 50 yds wide and between 100 yds and 130 yds long. (FA Rules). Taking a fair estimate and converting to metric I have used figures of 105 metres by 75 metres for my calculation.

The calculation is a simple one and works out as follows:
1 foorball pitch equals 105 x 75 mtrs = 7875 square metres.
1 glasshouse is 10 x 7875 = 78,750 square meters.
7 x glasshouses 78,750 x 7 = 551,250 square metres.

Without putting any spin on what may happen to the produce, that could be a heck of a lot of lettuces!

edit:

For the sake of those who are anti-metric, 551,250 square metres is about 136 acres.

This bucolic discussion is all very interesting, but euroairport is correct: this will not affect cargo flights.

lots of glass!

from the official site...no mention of exports though.
A massive £80 million will be invested in building the 91-hectare site located between Birchington and St Nicholas at Wade. The site, now officially named Thanet Earth, will include seven glasshouses, each covering the area of around 10 football pitches, and will use the very latest in efficient hydroponic growing techniques.
