From TravelDaily:

Slovenian carrier Adria Airways has announced it will move its London flights from Gatwick to Luton next month.

The carrier will operate four flights a week to Ljubljana with an Airbus A319. Speaking at the launch event at Luton Airport today, Alen Mlekuz, director corporate communications at Adria Airways said the move to Luton had allowed the airline to offer more capacity with a larger aircraft, meaning it will be easier to make group bookings.

“Gatwick had difficulty with our smaller aircraft and we could not compete with low-cost fares,” he said. “The market in Slovenia is tough with the surrounding airports but we are confident at the end of summer we can say this is a success and perhaps extend frequencies”.

He hinted that the airline may also launch flights in Manchester in the future.

The announcement is also a coup for Luton Airport due to Adria's membership of the Star Alliance. Tine Murn, head of UK and ROI communications at the Slovenian Tourist Board is confident of Luton’s leisure position despite its strong business reputation.

“Some leisure partners questioned our move to Luton but after meeting with the airport we are confident and have to challenge and route and tourism,” said Murn. “We have a fresh new start with this route and people forget that Luton is as far from London as Gatwick is”.

Just O'Leary, spouting the usual crap to get the papers and make some publicity...

No new routes were announced with this Press Release, either routes have been announced previously or are just season routes being re-instated, which have been on sale for months.

There are no new routes for LTN other than Alleghro in Sardinia, which we knew about some time ago.

They are basing 20 additional airframes at Stansted during the Olympics, I just wondered if they were adding to the 4 at Luton during this period?

Don't be fooled by the O'Leary Spin Machine...

This winter they parked up over 80 aircraft, simply because of lack of demand over the winter period, and these will simply be the 20 additional aircraft they were using last summer and removed for winter.

But O'Leary uses this in the press to state he is adding new routes, when they already existed...

Its a bit like Thomson removing charter capacity over the winter period, but they don't make a PR Exercise like Ryanair, to simply bang on and say they are starting a load of new routes.

In fairness to Mr O'Leary, like him or loathe him, he has a track record of success. Of course its spin, but its clever spin. He wants people talking about him, it gets exposure for his airline.

Although I don't believe in the long term Ryanair will be as successful as it is now, you can't fault their balance sheet.

As he has stated 'new' and 'addional passengers p.a.' is this not false advertising and should be refered to the ASA?

Ryanair are basing 20 additional aircraft at Stansted during the Olympics, I placed a post ages ago about this! Certainly nothing to do with MOL and today's press announcement, more about the bloke who was having to roster the crew for them.

http://www.pprune.org/6911219-post3749.html

1,500,000 pax over 6 months is close to 8,000 additional flights assuming every flight is full (189 pax).

What's the betting that Wizzair's next destination will be Arad?

They have just announced Arad-Milan, and Wizz flies from all its E European (EU) airports to LTN.

ARAD-LUTON

The only problem I see with that is that Arad is only 60 km from Timisoara so it could dilute passengers from said airport but we will just have to wait and see.

Playing devil's advocate - why not Tirana, Sarajevo, Osijek, Chisinau, Kosice or Tallinn ?

At the risk of straying off topic, I still reckon that Wizzair running a Luton-Tallinn route is not impossible, and here's my reasoning. Feel free to demolish (politely) if you think otherwise

Agreed that Ryanair already flies from Luton (as does Easyjet from Stansted). However, Tallinn airport has more passengers than Vilnius, and has relatively few LCC routes. Furthermore, Estonian Air, while owned by the state is not in great shape financially. I would humbly suggest that Europe has too many flag carrier airlines - if there isn't room for Malev, Spanair, or (long deceased) Lithuanian Airlines, and companies like CSA are having a tough time, I don't think Estonia has the economic size to support an independent Estonian Airlines, however important the Estonian Govt may deem it to be.

Considering the competition, is there an opportunity for an LCC to be able to set up a base at Tallin, possibly also acting a proxy for St Petersburg, given the reluctance of Lappeenranta's citizens to subsidise flights for Russians through marketing support payments to Ryanair ? Highly doubtful that Tallinn can support more than 1 based LCC. I think there is currently a window for Wizz to open a base, assuming they don't hang about. Leave it too long, and Ryanair will become overly dominant and gain too much of a first-mover advantage.

Were Wizz to open a LTN-TLL route, would Ryanair move their route to Stansted ? Do Easyjet really have the desire to keep TLL open as a small spoke for the forseeable future or would they perhaps move it to fortress Gatwick and take on Estonian Air head-to-head ?

I'm not saying that the next Wizz route from LTN will be Tallin or that it won't be Arad - just that there's plenty of different cities that Wizz could choose as their next Luton route.

Eventually all these routes will close as all the Eastern Europeans will have moved to the UK for a better life and there will be no one left to fly.

Wizz: Luton to Tallinn

AFAIK:
  1. Wizz have no aircraft based at Luton
  2. Wizz have no aircraft based at Tallinn
  3. Wizz have no routes to Tallinn

Any routes from Luton to non-Wizz bases need to operate a W:
Base - Luton - Non-base
-OR-
Base - Non-base - Luton

To add a Luton - Tallinn route this can mean:
  • A Base - Luton route needs an increased frequency to then W and do Base - Luton - Non-base
  • A Base - Luton route which currently does not W needs to start to W (big impact on schedule)
  • Wizz need to launch a Base - Tallinn route which will W to Luton (that's wishing for a lot...)
