Getting back to the main thread! A virgin mate tells me it's only 50 flightdeck positions to go. They will offer part-time/jobshare/unpaid leave so no compulsory redundancies forecast.

I think AirAsiaX is looking for another A343 and Mr branson owns 20%
of said airline so maybe something to look at.
At this time AirAsiaX only have one A343 ex Air Canada
This is use on the new STN route.

More A340-300's wanted !
AirAsia X, the long-haul affiliate of Malaysian budget carrier AirAsia, is looking for up to five more Airbus A340-300s to support growth while awaiting the 25 A350s or Boeing 787s that it is planning to order.

A quick look round the virgin empire shows significant losses on all fronts.
I don't see Virgin Atlantic being propped up for to long before RB retrenches until better times come along. This is no 9/11 and even when the good times do arrive there will be further fuel price rises and the green lobby to contend with.
A good barometer of the economy is the architects and how much work they have on.The last 2 years have been very flat and this is now showing itself in the building trade. There is little sign of things picking up and if anything getting worse. It will be a long time before the travelling public have money again for those expensive longhaul holidays.

Stormin Norman....that goes for any airline, so why put that in a Virgin thread especially?
Lots of airlines currently declaring loses....I think you will find VS will post a profit for the financial year just gone (VS works on the Singapore financial calendar of Feb-Feb), so they may actually be in better shape than a few others. As for anything else in the Virgin Group, well they are all seperate from each other, so a loss at one doesn't mean VS is in trouble.

It's menat to be replacing the weekly 744 MAN-Barbados service with a 2 weekly A340 service. However, there are mixed signals as to what variety of A340 may be used - they had planned sending an A340-600 on a test flight earlier this month but was postponed for a while.

How can you replace a B744 with a couple of A343/ A346's? How does that work? Also aren't the B744's getting a bit long in the tooth? When are VS going to update the appalling IFE on the LGW/ MAN B744's?
I am still upset about VS coming off Mumbai!!

The once weekly MAN-BGI on a B744 is becoming a twice weekly A343 service I believe. Hence, more seats on sale = good thing.
As to India, with BA upping capacity and the arrival of Kingfisher and Jet Airways the yields are crap and the aircraft is better deployed elsewhere. With the number of Islamist gunmen running around the subcontinent I imagine they will be plunging further before they rise again.

When are Virgin going to do something about the inferior IFE on their LGW/ MAN fleet? The aircraft themselves are 21st century but the interiors are bloody awful. I was on the BGI service last autumn and it was dreadful.

why would they do this?
can the relativly smaller SFB handle multiple B744 flights per day, as well as all the charters and local services.
Also, what about the codeshares VS currently has with CO?
