Last winter when I originally said that the Thomsonfly base would be pulled in favor of "Thomson towers" as quoted down the road at Doncaster. I was told that Jet2 were out doing Thomsons "left right and centre, we simply cannot compete at LBA". I was told the DSA base isn't doing very well, but all stops would be pulled to ensure that the DSA base would stay open. This included pulling the Leeds base. The person went on to say that it didn't stop there, the Humberside routes are next for the chop. All routes would be concentrated on DSA for the Yorkshire region.
I believe the idea behind this is Thomsons think that the people of Yorkshire who want a package holiday will fly just from Doncaster?? However much I don't like the way that Thomsons have operated, that is what was said. I hope the person I spoke to is wrong.

If they are thinking that, then they will be wrong. While ever other tour operators offer departures from HUY and LBA, people who want to use there local airport to depart from will use those other tour operators. HUY and Im sure LBA (plus DSA) have some very loyal passengers who will always use their local airport

Having a main base at DSA makes sense, after all many people dont care which airport they go from, or just want to avoid a long drive to MAN or LGW. However completely neglecting LBA and HUY will loose Thomson some customers, Im sure

BundyBear, I wonder who you work for ???
I always advise people not to use TOM because I dont like the way they operate. The reason I am having a pop at them for pulling out of LBA is the fact that 3 months ago or less they had a big advertising campaign boasting how many routes they flew out of LBA. No doubt many a pax will have booked for next summer and now, all of a sudden they face being dumped to DSA or MAN. The rest having to fly on a reverse W and this will not only reduce their time at their destination it probably will get replaced with a flight time they didnt want. Much I know a lot of these pax booked because they wanted LBA and will even sacrifice their destination just so they can fly from there. TOM have therefore taken the proverbial out of these pax, as they have done for the past couple of years with those who have booked the LPA flight in winter.

No need to have a pop at wawkrk, he is a respected member of the forum who posts intelligent posts regarding lba. Unlike you, QUOTE
"Lets just hope that as travel websites evolve, it will allow us to see off the money grabbing, largely now redundent middle man, AKA, the travel agent."

TOM I believe are very arrogant and pigheaded if they think we are all going to trekk down to DSA to fly on their wonderful flights. Like Leodis says, its another space for a Jet2 757 and bring it on i say. I bet PM is laughing his pants off

Leodis,
I would suggest, that unless the person to whom you were speaking was a director of Thomson or Tui, they could only have been hypothesizing. That does not meen their hypothosis was wrong however.
With regard to LBA, they still have 30 odd full time cabin crew based there year round ( a long standing and continued commitment ). Any move to close the base, would involve some protracted union - company negotiations. None of which have taken place, or scheduled to do so. In fact many crew wanting to transfer from LBA to other bases have had their requests declined, as I understand it. So what does that infer?
I for one would like to see Thomson operations expand at LBA not contract, but it seems the likes of yourself, RobT and warkrk, are happy to see them go. I do not believe LBA is so big as to be able to pick and choose, just my HO. The attitude of the latter two, seems that nothing less than a blind total commitment is displayed by a company, they are the enemy. That attitude will not generate growth. Jet 2 has and is being great for LBA, are we so naive though, as to forget the saying about eggs and just one basket? Rather than throwing stones at companies that are standing near the door, in what are difficult trading times for ALL airlines, why not be positive and try and bring them back in.
With regard to HUY, they would seem to be perilously close to DSA. But again, if after years of providing a service and commitment to HUY, are TOM, or anyone else for that matter, the bad guys if they move their operation to a more econimically advantageous base?
I hope to see more blue a/c in LBA, but only time will tell.
BB

Anyone know what happened at LBA this morning? Have been a number of cancellations, diversions and delays earlier.
