Weeze / Niederrhein / Laarbruch
Today the Oberverwaltungsgericht Münster Court withdrew the licence of Niederrhein Airport (Weeze, ex- RAF Laarbruch). The main reasons given were the insufficiant regard of noise issues in the airport certification process.
According to press releases of both the airport itself and the defendant, the District Government of Düsseldorf, flight operations will not cease immediately. Further legal action is being investigated by both.
Niederrhein is currently a Ryanair-only airport, with flights to Stansted, Rome-Ciampino, Shannon, Barcelona-Girona, Glasgow-Prestwick, ans Stockholm-Skavsta. From May 2006 Hapagfly was to offer flights to Mallorca and Antalya. A little GA traffic is also present.
Oh, and by the way, I'm now looking for a new job...

Shame, hope they can sort the issue out or has it gone past this? Did a few weeks work in NRN for an A.C.M.I operator in 2004, good location, great little terminal and good access to CGN and DUS. Thought noise would of been the last thing on the agenda here!

My crystal ball is as good as anybody else's, but at the moment it's looking pretty bleak and morale on site is at an all time low.
An interesting little fact: The airport manager was not present at today's court session. He chose to spend the day skiing in the Alps instead.

Noise issue! I suppose the locals have alredy forgotten the hovering noise machines that used to operate from there. As an airport it will be much quieter but the NIMBYS will want it turned into a nice park no doubt.

What is it with German loco airports? Hasn't LBC also had a similar judgement against it? Hasn't AOC also had licening issues of late?
How has HHN succeeded where the others have failed? I know Fraport manage both HHN and FRA, but there must be more to it than this.
I can understand people not being happy about noise. But this is a far bigger problem at the major airports, where flights are coming in and out every few minutes.
If there is an enviromental argument against smaller hubs, it should be on surface access grounds (DUS, FRA, CGN etc all have excellent stations on site), not noise.
Or does this date back to issues with the '200s? Haven't they all gone now anyway?

Hmmm - I operate into there regularly and would be most surprised to hear that noise is an issue here One would wonder whether there isn't something much deeper behind this? It's a great little airport and if anything an under-used facility IMHO....... Hope it all works out for you (and me) flugholm

Hope it gets sorted.
Great airport, gives excellent access to the parts of the Netherlands and Germany that are important (to me!)
Nice folks and excellent handling by Solid Handling.

A cynic might suggest that LH have a hand in some of this - Hahn being the exception because it is owned by FRAPort, which I understand LH were/are buying a chunk of.

I definately suspect something untoward here having been based there in My RAF days(1978-1981)and cannot recall any noise issues with military jets so am sure the noise levels will be a lot less with newer civilian traffic, good luck to You all and lets hope sense prevails.

I think Niederrhein ist a great airport.
I got to love it during V Bird times.
But I don´t think NRN has any chance as being a Ryanair airport with a few charters to survive and earn money.
The business people are missing.

May I ask all PPRuNers to support NRN by giving their (electronic) signature on
http://www.pro-niederrhein.net/texte/main.html .
(I hope the nice folks at pro-niederrhein get an English language version up and running very shortly.)

Update:
The signature lists now contain over 13,000 names in support of Niederrhein Airport, both in electronic and paper format. Also political pressure is finally increasing in support of the airport, surprisingly through all political parties.
Compare that to the 18 persons who have sued against the airport certification (and won)... It seems democracy is not a democratic process...
Anyway, thanks to everyone who showed support for this nice little airport!
We're currently at about 600 movements per month, with about half of that being Ryanair and the rest general aviation. Flight operation continues as the court order is not in effect yet. Should it come in effect one option is to get a preliminary airport certification until a new water-tight certification is sorted out. We"re talking about years in certification!
At the moment no future routes from here are in sight. Seems no-one's interested in investing with the very unclear legal situation looming overhead...
