Is this a rumpur brought on by a dream of wishful thinking because unless BA have been looking the other way it won't ever happen. Any QANTAS Manchester op just bleeds pax from London.

I'm sure he did. I was just being a smart arse.
Load factors are always very good on Qantas up to the UK I believe, but just not sure they could justify a 744 to MAN unless is stopped off somehwere else on the way. DUB maybe?

Does anyone ever use the chartered "Qantas" 146 service from London to Manchester ?
Not only is it a placeholder for QF slots at Heathrow, but the timings are so poor for connecting passengers that it is more effective for Qantas passengers to travel on BA domestic flights on this sector, which have a QF codeshare flight number on them anyway.

I have seen nothing to suggest that a QF return to MAN is on the cards, codeshares and slotblockers excepted. However, if they are interested their decision is nothing to do with what British Airways may or may not want. I believe that BA actually SOLD their stake in QF some time ago. That means that QF are free to make commercial judgements as they wish without a BA veto at board level. BA may suggest to QF that "Oneworld" is best served by feeding hapless Northerners to LHR, but QF would do better to note the MAN - Australia traffic leaking (or flooding?) onto SQ/MH/EK/QR etc, rather than facing that dire change of terminals at Hounslow. With Etihad confirmed at MAN and the return of CX a strong possibility, QF does need to decide whether to fight for the Northern market or surrender any pretence of competing with the very attractive alternatives available there.
Sadly, I fear that QF may well choose to continue cowering at Hounslow. I will be very pleasantly surprised if they show any bottle and pitch up to reclaim a slice of the MAN market. Time will tell.

I did mean DUB.
I know it is not strictly "on the way" but I know the Irish have a large proportion of Australia's annual tourists and a DUB-MAN-SYD QF service might get the pax required to have decent loads both to and from Australia.

Here's a radical idea; why don't Qantas operate a MAN-BKK-SYD or MAN-HKG-SYD route. Assuming they can get the traffic rights; that would offer 2 new/additional destinations from MAN.

It has nothing to do with whether BA own part of Qf or not. BA/QF still have a Joint Service agreement. If you will look at BA/QF flight schedules you will see both airlines codeshare on eachothers flights between UK and Australia. Qantas wanted to do fligths between Mumbai and London and Shanghai and London, but those flights did not suit BA, so they did not happen.
QF will fly to cities which give them a fair amount of traffic at the front of the plane - First/Business Class.
SQ/MH may be happy with the traffic in tourist class, and Emirates/Qatar/Etihad are in Manchester because of markets other than the Australian/NZ one.
On the other hand, if Jetstar does become a longhaul carrier with planes able to reach Europe, watch this space!

Full most days.
EK are also looking at a 3rd daily service and SQ will be expanding to a daily direct B777-300ER next year.
QF operated to MAN for many years with a B747-400. Service was pulled when BA bought a 20% stake. With that out of the way QF are their own boss no matter what code share agreements they have.

There is no interest with Qantas returning to Manchester at the present time.
There is more focus on LHR and possible route changes within the Far East.
Qantas is removing its LHR-SIN-PER service from next year and LHR-HKG-SYD will become daily instead.

There was an article in one of the "quality" Australian newspapers earlier this month about the proposed Jetstar international expansion. It mentioned Manchester as being a potential route. Jetstar will operate economy and premium economy cabins on their international routes.
I don't think there's any prospect of Qantas returning to Manchester.

If SIA changes to a 777-300ER daily, that will be a reduction in seats compared with 5 non stop 744s and two one stop 744s via Zurich ( from current timetable)
Qantas started operating to Manchester in 1982. They changed to operating a tag on from LHR with 743s, then 744s. It made no sense to operate a 744 200 miles between LHR and MAN.
So Qantas stopped operating to MAN, and BA stopped flying to Adelaide, and both airlines code share on each other services.

Manchester only gets 2 B747 a week and 5 B777 200 so I think it would be a net gain of seats not a loss
Bring on the B777-300 as think this a lovely bird, it just looks right!!

Would be nice to see QF back, but as stated above, I think SQ have made the MAN to OZ route their own and I doubt there is traffic for both.
QANTAS waived goodbye to MAN and the regions traveller traffic when it stopped coming here, unless you get an offer so good you can't refuse it you'd be mad to add an additional transit on a an already long journey, especially one between T1 and T4 at LHR.

The northewest England - Australia VFR market shrunk by 30% after Quaintarse pulled off the MAN-LHR sector.
What many didn't realise was that pax wanted to get on a plane at pod and stay on it to destination no matter how many stops, not fannying around changing guage, ternimal et al in the cause of efficiency.
Any airline with the bottle to serve the rest of the UK from MAN taking in Perth and Sydney even just weekly (weakly?) would I'm sure suceed. B777-ELR maybe?
They could fit in a USA west coast too maybe?
