Excel Airways and Air Atlanta Europe to merge

It has just been announced that Excel Airways and Air Atlanta Europe are to merge with a target completion date of May 1st 2006. Both companies are already owned by the Avion Group and already share some resources. Excel is primarily a shorthaul 737 operator and AAE is a longhaul 747, 757 and 767 operator. The new company is expected to trade as Excel Airways. It's unclear whether Travel City Direct will remain as an independent brand or also become part of Excel. It's also unclear whether or not there will be any redundancies or fleet reduction.

Will the Air Atlanta cabin crew still be crewing the 747 aircraft? We flew with them back in august and they were fantastic, would be a shame to replace them. XL.com branding was all over our flight so i knew this was coming.

When the airline with the worst punctuality record is finally merged with the one with the second worst record what possible benefit will that have for the passenger. Thats the guy who generally pays the bills.
No doubt the crews are terrific but to put on the performance they have had this year something must be drastically wrong and its either the equipment or the top brass.
Until they change either or both of those then its not going to improve things for the people who are termed SLF.

Maybe you could let us all know how you define the 2 worst performers for punctuality as according to the official stats issued by LGW/MAN airport you are far from correct as far as XLA is concerned.

At NCL, XLA are certainly the porest performers this year by a long way thanks to those old banger 734s and 763s. A shame really as their onboard service is pretty good.

it's been an awful summer granted however all charters have had their bad times this summer was ours i remember when cally and flying colours merged to create jmc chaos at lgw delays were normal moral was low and crew left in droves now look at thomas cook one of the best charters to work for!! xla are getting rid of 737-400 buying/leasing 800's for next summer and trying to get all 757's G reg by next year.if they can learn from mistakes made this year and turn things around then they can put this year behind them and move on.xla are a nice company to work for and i hope it stays that way.

it will make the operation easier crew have to be fleeted at xla as cannot operate all a/c types due to the TF reg which is a headache for operations. also hopefully engineering will greatly improve if it's all inhouse aae/aai ones are a joke compared to the xla engineers who are great. this summer has been terrible so it can only get better!!

Interesting to hear hostiegirl expressing her expert opinion on engineering matters. Perhaps she could enlighten us on other operational matters such as fuel tankering policy or brake wear reduction while she's at it?

Cool

Actually GW76

The 75's are being re-registered but only have about 18 months useful time left in the company. They are being replaced by B762's and B763's. This process begins after the end of next summer.

Hostiegirl

I think you'll find Monarch are taking over the engineering and maintenance of the B757's and B767's so the coverage will probably be better. The crews are to be trained by Excel.

Will Air Atlanta still be maintaining the 747's or will they be switched to another company?

Well, I believe TF-ABA will be leaving the fleet soon along with the other -200s. The -300s and -400s are staying a wee while longer I would think.

TF-ABA and TF-ABP are supposed to be either scrapped or parked in the desert next month (this is definite but then again it was definite last year as well). TF-ARG is planned to do the Falklands run this winter and who knows what's happening to TF-ARO. That aircraft may stay in the UK as a winter spare. Before the recent announcement the plan was to have four -300s permanently in the UK year round and on the G- reg. These will be the two existing ex-Singapore Airlines machines (TF-AME and TF-AMJ) plus either another two identical aircraft or the two -300s currently with Iberia. If this happened it would be great as these are very high standard aircraft (on both sides of the flight deck door) but whether or not everything has now changed remains to be seen. Four good quality -300s, properly operated and in Excel colours could be very impressive.
