Question weather related questions

Hello,

My name is Tamara Pejovic and I am working on a new project to identify the possible impacts of climate change for UK aviation and the feedback mechanisms involved. In this project we aim to identify how changes in the climate will affect UK air transport and how those effects will in turn influence the ways in which aviation contributes to further climate change.

However, at this stage of the research, some explanation regarding aviation weather is necessary, to better understand current and future needs of flight planning and routing (re-routing). At the bottom of this page, you will find couple of questions. I would kindly ask you to spend just a few minutes of your time and help me to clarify these things.

Thank you in advance. All comments and suggestions are more then welcome.

Regards,
Tamara Pejovic

1. Are there any limitations for an en route flight associated with wind conditions? (Like they exist for take-off and landing.)

2. Are weather conditions a factor in route planning while in flight?

3. Are there any tools used for optimal wind route planning?

3. What are the available operational and planning tools that are used for weather avoidance? (Severe weather, storms, etc…)

a. en-route?
b. terminal?

4. What severe weather avoidance and optimal route planning tools are being developed for eventual deployment?

5. In the North Atlantic region, how much latitude are the airlines allowed in selecting their specific routes? For example, in order to save fuel and reduce in-flight travel time.

6. If they are allowed to choose their specific route, when must they do this and/or can it be done while in flight?

7. Explain whether there are differences in how weather conditions are accounted for in advance route planning versus during trajectory adaptations while in flight?
