How to uncover what route/flight a friend is on...

... a friend of mine has been detained in the US since December 25th for being in the country without a visa.

He was being held in El Paso, Texas.

At 4am this morning (Sunday) (US time) he was put on a plane out of the country, I presume somewhere in Texas, with an ultimate destination of Dublin, Ireland.

I don't know if the flight is direct; I don't know if it's a standard carrier or special US Gov flight (though I expect it's the former, he was only being held for not having a visa, and not for any criminal wrongdoings).

Can anyone here advise me how I might discover what flight he's on, as his friends and family would like to meet him on arrival in Dublin?

By law i dont think anyone will be allowed to disclose that information. I know we certainly aernt allowed to tell anyone if somebody is on a flight or not, you will just have to wait for them to arrive!

That's unfortunate FTL, but understandable.

It's a case of sticking around the airport then, as the chap will be penniless without means to contact us or take transportation.

Wrafter;

Makes one wonder about the actions of the US Immigration service..If someone is detained on 24/12/04 for a breach of US Immigration law, and I do not condone breaking any law whether Immigration or otherwise, but locking someone someone up for 3 weeks for a breach of Immigration law is a little bit rich.

Considering that there are +/- 6 flights from the US to Ireland every day, can anyone tell me why someone should be detained in a prison for 3 weeks before being sent home.

I am sure that this is not a problem just for Irish nationals but from any country outside the United States

We got him out quicker than is the norm too Flame, we have a number of contacts in the Irish government, ex-foreign minister included, so rather than taking two months, it took less than one.

We found it difficult to make contact with him whilst in detention, he not being able to receive international phone calls and he not being able to make any. We communicated through his girlfriend in Houston (who he's had to leave behind without meeting her to bid farewell).

I've just discovered now that it may not be Dublin he's flying to but Cork or Shannon - but we're unsure.

Guess he's gonna have to beg 50 cent off someone in the terminal to make a call...

Wrafter;

I assume, that like most people caught in breach of US Immigration policy (which I do not condone) that he did not receive a prison sentance (although kept in prison) until arrangements were made to have him removed from the US

Correct, he was not in prison, but in a detention centre, and allowed out into secure space once a day for 20 minutes for exercise.

We've just rung detention centre in question and they refused to give us information about the flight or route because it may "put our officers in danger".
