AA

Not the most reliable source of info I know but Airliners.net is carrying a big rumour of a BHX-JFK service using 752's and a report on justplanes.com says that AA are investigating the possibility of using 752's more on trans-atlantic routes.

I've heard over the weekend that Air Astana may be interested in operating to Birmingham with B737-800 or B757. Presumably offering connections to Asia from Almaty

BHX Busiest Month Ever !

Birmingham International Airport (BIA) has recorded its busiest month
ever, with some 1,023,697 travelling through the Airport in July, an
increase of 7.8% over 2004. This is the first time that the Airport
has broken through the million passenger milestone in a July. The
signs are good for even greater record levels in the peak month of
August.

Furthermore, on Friday 29th July the Airport recorded its busiest
ever day, with 38,190 passengers travelling through in 24hrs.

Richard Heard, Birmingham International Airport's Managing Director
commented, "These record passenger levels reflect the increasing
desire of people in the Midlands to travel - and to do that from
their regional airport. We have been delighted to launch a wide range
of new services this year to places far and wide. We now serve 126
destinations across the world direct, and many more through
connections at global hubs such as Dubai. You can now fly from
Birmingham on more airlines, to more places, at more value.

We have broken the records through a great team effort from everyone
at the Airport and we are continuing to invest in our facilities so
that we provide an even better service for more passengers in the
future. A major expansion to the Terminal 1 departure lounge is
already underway, along with an expansion of the Immigration and
Baggage Hall. In Terminal 2, we have just started a project to add
further check in desks and baggage systems improvements.

"The continuing success of the airport is great news for the Region
as we are one of the major drivers of employment and economic growth."

Scheduled traffic grew by 24.2% overall with passenger numbers
increasing on non-EU flights which grew by 51%, on Asian services
which were up 42.2%, as well as on Transatlantic routes which rose by
31.1% and EU flights which increased by 22.2%.

Other scheduled destinations which saw an increase in passenger
traffic during the month include, Prague (+108%), Larnaca (+98.3%),
Milan (+92.6%), Helsinki (+65.6%), Edinburgh (+26.3%), Copenhagen
(+24.3%), Amsterdam (+15.3%), and Zurich (+12.4%).

Charter passengers fell by 13.5% overall, reflecting a wider trend
across the charter market. Despite the overall fall in charter
traffic, a number of countries did experience growth in passenger
numbers from Birmingham including, Bulgaria (+78.3%), Mexico (+50.1%)
Croatia (+30.6%), Malta (+20.7%) Cyprus (+17.5%) and Turkey (+13.4%).

Scheduled traffic accounted for 65% of the total July figure while
charter passengers made up the remaining 35%.

Red face az

I hear they are pulling out on the 1st of November. Can't book flights on the internet past this date. Shame they had good loads particularly this summer. Hey Ho lets just hope this is a short term measure (a temporary re allocation of resources and aircraft) and they return soon.

Yes and at the same time as Alitalia, BACX reduce from 3 to 2. That means from 5 flights with reasonable loads to 2.

Scope for one of them to change their minds perhaps.

Jet Airways

Found this article..........

Jet Airways appears to be twice lucky. It is wet leasing one of its three Airbus 340-300E to Gulf Air for nearly eight weeks, a first by an Indian carrier in recent years. The aircraft, which will be based out of Bahrain, a Gulf Air hub, is likely to be mounted on the Athens sector.

Coincidentally, Gulf Air was one of the owners of Jet Airways’ holding company, Tail Winds, registered out of Isle of Man, till some years ago. Gulf Air and Kuwait Airways each held 20% stake in Tail Winds till the government banned foreign airlines from holding equity in Indian carriers. The promoters of Jet Airways (Naresh Goyal and his family) then bought out the stake of the international carriers in keeping with the new norms.

Since Jet Airways is facing a surplus aircraft situation with the wide-bodied Airbus engaged for its US and UK-bound flights, the airline has been seeking alternate avenues of deployment. A few weeks ago, it leased the plane to Air-India which was facing a month long shortage of one plane on its India-London sector and wanted an aircraft to fill the gap.

Three Airbus planes have proved one too many for its once daily Mumbai-London service. It would have been a different story, if Jet had secured the go-ahead from the US authorities for its flights to Newark from Mumbai/Delhi.

The wet lease will run from August 30 to October 24, ’05. The flights will be operated in a two-class configuration of 38 business and 231 economy class seating. Typical of a wet lease deal, Jet will provide the aircraft with pilots and cabin crew. The inflight catering will be dealt by Gulf Air.

On its return, Jet Airways plans to introduce a second daily service, this time out of Delhi to London. It also proposes to mount a thrice weekly service to Birmingham from Delhi via Amritsar, akin to Air-India’s recently introduced flight. The Jet’s schedule is likely to cover the days when Air-India is not flying.

Interesting, wouldn't Mumbai be the better option?

1,014,013 in July and only an extra 35,000 above for the August total!

Can I assume, as August is traditionally a very busy month for every airport, that Birmingham has reached it plateau?

Any idea if Luton has hit a 'Million in a Month' for the first time ever?

Perhaps you would be more likely to get the answer on the Luton thread.

Mr Ian F, forgot to post Lutons figures, only BAA airports. I am sure that this was an oversight?

I suggest that BHX is a more European business oriented airport, than some - and also has a high concentration of traffic to and from the Indian subcontinent.

European business is at it's slackest in August, and loads to India and Pakistan are also poorer during the summer months as the climate is at it's least pleasant.

Add to those factors the windfall from the BA fiasco at LHR in July, and it goes some way to explaining the comparative small increase over July.
