Berlin Tempelhof closure & BBI

Is Tempelhof still scheduled for closure in October, or has there been any progress on the court case by airlines wanting to keep it open (apparently an announcement was due at the end of August).

Nope.
Some airlines have fled the ranks though, Luxair have already stopped flights to THF and moved on to TXL. Not enough slots at TXL for all THFers available though.

Just found this statement on the official site:

http://www.berlin-airport.de/PubEngl...HF/pd4604.html

I never got to experience the old HKG before it closed, so this is one which might be worth a visit before demolition? Looks like quite an impressive place, although not sure if you need to actually fly in to appreciate it? How does the landing there compare with LCY - can any city airport be as dramatic (maybe YTZ, or Meigs field if it ever re-opened)?

The Air Traffic Licensing Authority at the State of Berlin today approved the application made by the Berlin Airport Authority (BFG) to be discharged from its obligation to operate once the summer timetable lapses on 30th October 2004 (i.e. with effect from midnight on 31st October 2004). The order was given to immediately enforce this discharge.

Flew into THF this summer in my 182...just for the experience. On departure they allow you to leave on a special VFR route that takes you over the city, then across overhead Tegel before turning on course for Poland, which is where we were heading. L used to like flying in there as a passenger on SN too - a real journey back in time.

Robbo,

I'm not a pilot, so I was talking about using scheduled services, probably with SN via BRU - they have fares from BHX for about £135 in October, which looks reasonable. Berlin is a city I've been keen to revisit since I last went, just after the wall came down.

Will there still be much to see - if so, do you have any advice about prevailing winds / best side to sit on?

Flew in there several times some years ago in a 146 when a German airline called Conti Flug was operating from Tempelhof to London City - so interesting landings at both ends. Not a steep glidepath like City but the apartment blocks are surprisingly close on short finals, seemed closer than terminal/hangars at most airfields. What the noise must have been like in the 1970s with constant Pan Am 727s, BA One-Elevens and Air France Caravelles is be beyond belief !

The overall field shape is circular, with runways approx 09/27 (27 seemed preferred direction). The terminal building itself on the north side is spectacular 1930s architecture and it will be a shame to lose it. Airside there is a canopy so high that you taxi in right underneath it, just as if you could bring a plane under the St Pancras station roof - a 1930s way of keeping pax dry without airbridges. Step outside the terminal and you are in a city centre street !

You can't really see the ramp from inside (take pictures before walking in) but you can get lots of good interior shots. Outside the terminal walk along the perimeter to the right and you come to a memorial to the Berlin Airlift with (years ago) a DC-4 on display.
