Manchester squeezed...!

Two weeks into the summer season and it looks as though Manchester traffic will be parking on the M56.

With slots full most days and nowhere to park how will the airport achieve any further major growth and where will the expansion come from ?

In the last two weeks the airport has "theroetically" run out of stands on at least three occasions that I know of. Slots also appear tight with the airport at full capacity most mornings.

I assume that the airport is on target to do 23m pax this year but is that then it ?

When 40m was fcast a few yaesr abck the arport had a mix of much larger aircft and although its great to see Embraer/ Jetstrems Dash 8 etc they only carry 20-50 odd passengers.

So where are we going to get some stands from, any innovative ideas anyone ?

...oh and please could we have some traffic Sat am...its the only day it's dead !

It can't be too long until they begin expansion to the west of Terminal 2 and to the east of Terminal 3. Their development strategy up to 2015 can be viewed here, it lists the proposals it has to increase terminal and stand capacity:

Manchester Airport Development Strategy

The problem is, after 11am most mornings the place seems dead. They are however offering incentives to airlines to use the airport out of peak hours.

This shows how popular MAN is getting. All i say that is they should move the smaller aircraft to remote stands, and give priority to large aircraft. And M56 is already chaos, so parking rhem there would make it worse

there was no stands , not even remotes were avail, aircraft parked on the taxiways and ATC thorughly miffed to say the least.

And with yest more new services on the cards where are they going to park ?

TCM,
Re Sunday [I wasn't at work] was "broadly" similar to Monday [I am led to believe] when I was on duty.
A "phenomenon" called "Fog" came into play, and we [ATC] were into "Single Runway Operations". This means we move 20-ish per hour rather than 60 per hour. Guess what? Yup a backlog.
On Monday, we were advising of 90 mins delay for "start-up".
ALL agences [Apron ATC Handlers] were doing their best.
YES, Manch desperately NEEDS more stands...but, I say again BUT not one aeroplane was parked on a taxyway.
If you park on a taxyway, it is blocked. last thing we want

Is this the answer?

I posted this item a month or two back and never received a response, however maybe it will answer your questions - well in part at least!!

New Stands at Manchester T3?
I know this subject has been raised before, but no definative information was posted.

Work is currently progressing to provide remote stands at the 24R holding bay - floodlighting has been installed. I understand also that additional stands for Emb-145 size aircraft will also be provided in the region of the present stand 56.

Does anyone know when these stands will be introduced into service, and more importantly what would happen if the holding bay stands were occupied and then CAT3 conditions developed and single runway operations were required? Being in the area of J2 holding point I presume that they are outside the localiser sensitive area, but that would result in aircraft having to use the JS taxiway. Presumably this would then mean that J4 would become the Cat3 holding point with possible additional delays.

Any feedback would be appreciated.

I agree , not parked , but waiting on the taxiyway outside the fire station , 2 for 20mins , 1 for 25mins.

To hear 'Decimal Duncan' tell a Jetset and a Ryan Air to take up the hold , delay '' undeterminable'' was a bit baffling at first, but then the Jetset asked why and was told "due no parking positions available ''

I hear there will be new stands on an extended T2 but not for use until 2006.

best rgds
