How about on a city-pair basis? Is London-Dublin the busiest?

Where did you find that table? There's loads of good stuff at http://www.caa.co.uk/erg/erg_stats/s...ld=2003Annual, but I didn't see that one

Based on combining those in the top 50, the top 10 would read:

1 London Dublin 3,834,083
2 London Amsterdam 2,770,312
3 London Edinburgh 2,432,947
4 London Glasgow 2,186,304
5 Heathrow Paris 1,970,345
6 London Rome 1,712,151
8 Heathrow Frankfurt 1,459,163
9 Heathrow Manchester 1,385,320
10 Heathrow Chicago 1,356,051
11 Heathrow Los Angeles 1,180,145


A few comments:

1) Dublin is the busiest by quite a margin - LTN and LCY not included in these, but it is the only city to have 3 mentions in the top 50 - all LON airports
2) LTN does not get a single mention in this table - you can add a fair few EZ LTN pax to all of the top 5, exc DUB.
3) How many of LON/DUB or LON/AMS etc are transiting? I would imagine a good number from DUB transit in LON, whereas a fair few from LON transit at AMS, and vice versa?

I guess he downloaded Table 12 1 International Passengers and Table 12 2 Domestic Passengers; combined the two sets of data and then sorted it.


As for Dublin don't forget Ryanair fly Luton - Dublin, you should find that in Table 12 1.

I would suggest that a large majority of Ryanair Dublin traffic is point-point with some transiting at Stansted.

For Amsterdam a larger proportion of the BA/BD and KL traffic will be transiting at Schiphol, whereas most of easyJet's will be point-point. However, you can't find that out directly from the CAA. A way of getting a good estimate (unless you work for one of the airlines) is to buy CAA Survey data .....

The most popular routes from London Airports by number of flights (not PAX) can be found on this punctuality list, which lists operator punctuality on the top 30 routes.

London to Dublin is the top with over 35,000 flights in 2003, followed by Edinburgh, Amsterdam and Glasgow.

It seems strange to me in the top ten city-pair basis there isn't Milan (MXP+LIN+BGY)

Wow, 35,000 flights per year between LON and DUB! I feel as if I must have done at least 10,000 of them last year!

I wonder how much fuel/time/cost would be saved if the RAF could modify their Welsh danger area?????? Surely they don't need all of it!!

This is the problem with taken the top 50 airport pairs and trying to derive the top 10 city pairs from that list.

In fact the total London - Milan in terms of passengers in 2003 was: 1,928,930 of which 1,913,809 were on scheduled flights and 15,121 were on charter flights.

If you've got time see if you can come up with the definitive city-pair listing!

Worth pointing out that the www.flightontime.info data on Key Routes analyses movements at London Airports so both departures to Dublin and arrivals from Dublin are included in the 35,000 - equating to rougly 17,500 flights in each direction on the route.

Still nearly 50 flights per day though...

LON Airports to Milan Airports (LIN/MXP/BGY) in terms of scheduled flight movements comes 11th on the Key Routes List.

Key routes list only seems to cover Europe? Looks like I missed out NY on the joined list - but still a few LGW to EWR to add to that.

If London just had one big airport, then I guess there wouldn't be so much confusion?

Sorry, meant to add - what would be the most popular city from the uk as a whole? Probably still DUB, judging by the FR routes from most cities, or AMS would be v. high too because of all the KLM feeder routes. Then NYC has a good collection of regional routes too - it must certainly trounce all other cities for long haul routes.

are BGY pax included in the above figures?

I am asking it because here in Italy there is a debate on BGY as a Milan apt or not. Officialy it is not, and traffic data issued by the Italian CAA lists BGY under Bergamo only and not as Milano - BGY/LIN/MXP. (www.assaeroporti.it)

It is, I guess, more or less the situation of PIK. Is it or it isn't part of the Glasgow airport system (if any)? are its traffic data reported under Glasgow-GLA/PIK or simply as Prestwick?

Anybody can sort it out?

Downloaded Table 12.1; extracted Italy data and then summed the traffic on all London Airports to Linate, Malpensa and Bergamo. ICAA data is airport pair only, but as someone asked about Milan and included Bergamo so did I. I don't think there is an official line on this.

"airport system" implies a single ownership / management often part of city government - e.g. Port Authority operate LGA, EWR & JFK.

I believe there is a body which declares whether an airport is part of a city or not - I know they recently declared Niederrhein a Dusseldorf airport, even though the FR website has it as Niederrhein-Dusseldorf, not under D for Dusseldorf.

I tend to use OAG to determine if an airport comes under a city or not, and would include both BGY and PIK under their respective cities.

Another argument would be to do it be mileage - say 100km, although this would then bring CVT under BHX, and both GLA and PIK under EDI (sorry, had to get that one in, sure it will provoke a few people ).

Interesting to see how close DUB & AMS are to each other, I presume they are the top 2? Is PAR 3?

Also, if you add LHR+LGW+STN+LTN+LCY, I think that makes London the clear aviation capital of the world - over 100m, with Tokyo or Chicago #2? Despite all the talk of AMS, CDG or FRA catching up with LHR for transit traffic, they are all quite a few million paxpa behind.
