Angel SAA direct to Dakar and JFK

I am sure I remember a price of R4999.00 return from Jhb to Dakar .. as advertised in the In - Flight Magazine ... S .. Bona ...
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
South Africa Airways (SAA) efforts at providing more opportunities for Nigerians and other West African Countries with Flight connections to New York, and at an affordable price, was further realised as the African number one International carrier commenced two flight operations from Dakar, Senegal to New York recently.
The flight which is like a new year gift to the sub-region currently lagging behind in the continent in the Travel and Tourism business, is operated twice weekly on Tuesday and Saturday.
The airline operates from Johannesburg via Dakar to New York, and on Mondays and Wednesday, SA 204 returns from John F. Kennedy (JFK) in New York via Dakar to Johannesburg.
SAA's executive vice president, marketing and communications, Mr. Victor Nosi said, "we welcome those who are travelling between Johannesburg and Dakar and New York. We also welcome those flying between New York and Dakar, and those from Dakar to Johannesburg, including everyone wishing to fly between New York and Johannesburg."
Uniquely, the SAA's direct flights to Dakar is expected to further open up the doors for economic growth and employment in the French West African country.
Senegal has a strong cultural and historical background. These add another interesting destination to SAA's extended list throughout the African Continent. The airlines other destinations within West Africa include Lagos (Nigeria) Accra (Ghana) and Abidjan (Cote d'Ivoire).
Uniquely too, the route confirms the airlines dedication to establishing new and more convenient services for its passengers.
It also helps to promote and strengthen relationships between South Africa and Dakar and the whole of Senegal.
SAA flies to over 20 destinations within Africa with the help of its regional partners, SAA Airlink and SA Express.
Can anyone say how this new SAA route will affect their long established one to New York via Sal, Cape Verde islands? In short and long term?
Another try?
How long is this going to last? As long as the Jhb-Lagos-JFK run?
A horse told me the following story.....
....because the route was done in conjunction with Air Nigeria, all the handling in Lagos was handled by them in Lagos. Of all the pax carried from Lagos to JFK a substantial number( 25-30%)had to be flown back to Lagos on SAA's cost, with an additional fine of $10000 per passenger, for arriving with pax with out the neccesary visas.This happend because the said ground handlers never bothered to check,( or even looked the other way) if those pax had indeed visas to enter the USA, It happened so regularly and became so costly combined with the limit it placed on available seating that SAA decide to call it a day.
Anybody heard the same romour?
Contraxdog,
Yep, heard the same rumour and you've put it correctly. I believe, however, the fine is US$1000 per passenger and not US$10K.
Let's wait and see how long it will last.
As one who flys in and out of the U.S. daily, I can tell you that Immigration and Customs here are very steep in their fine structure. $10k per person IS NOT out of line. Im sure it will be settled for much less, but they are authorized to fine on the spot.
Im glad to see they sent some back. We are simlilar to SA in the fact that We are overrun by illegals.
Bert, thanks for the gen. I can quite believe it. Why I mention the US$1000 is because I was told by a little birdie in SAA that they had to pay exactly that in several cases.
As for the illegals entering South Africa, they get deported but get back into the country almost quicker than we can get them out. But that's a long story about busses and trains.
Enjoy the day.
