Red face Jobs in SA: High Mobility Goalposts

Ah, the joy of aviation! Went for an interview with Rossair Charter. Thought it went OK, but can obviously not confirm that. Didnt get in. Then I hear a multi source rumour that theyre looking for 500 - 900 hr pilots. Great! Since I've got 2000+ I gather that I've got too many hours! What was I thinking?!? Silly me getting all those hours! The pain....

If you are a regular browser of the African forum you will see a long and sad article on recruitment at SAA. The "disease" currently sweeping through South Africa.......called "Affermative Action"It is being felt in the Aviation Industry at ALL levels.
All companies that do Charter work in RSA have to submit tenders to their prospective clients. In your tender you have to include the companies "Employment Equity"(read:- how to plug in a whole bunch of suntanned faces into your company)plan. If your company does not have an employment equity plan................sorry for you........no charter, which means: no flying,no revenue and no food on the proverbial table. All companies, worth their "salt", are desperatley trying to comply with what the current goverment is forcing them to do.
Finding a job in Aviation,or any industry for that matter,if you are a pale male..................youre right at the bottom of the food chain.Dont single out one company that declined you, read the big picture..................
If you have 2000 hrs plus....and a current job be DAM greatful and stay with it....there are allot less fortunate than you out there.

C4,

No way bru. With apologies to ORCA , it will take more than a tyre lever to get me out of Africa. My
A WEM might still make it...barely...but a WAM is totally fd!
specifically was mostly aimed at the State owned and parastatals.

If you are in demand enough (read qualified & experienced) it should be no problem to weather the storm in the industry. Sense still prevails in certain companies and only the best suited gets the job, irrespective of colour/race. Affirmative action in itself is not a bad thing - live and let live - the method employed in certain instances in bringing about the affirmative action change process is the serious drawback. The BIG problem is for the wannabees that are still trying to get on to the bottom of the ladder and having to fight change that is being implemented @rse about face. And make no mistake, I'm not writing this because I'm secure and cosy where I sit. As I said in another post on another thread somewhere, aviation is like F1 racing (not the circus bit Guns ), the only certainty we have is change. Like everybody I might find myself at the bottom of the food chain very quickly as well.

C4, I'm with BAKELA on this. I ran from Zim, but now am coming crawling back to Efrica, tail between legs. I left, I saw, I learned. Efrica is the place to be. It's true what they say about it being in your blood.
The industry is rough worldwide at present, and there are demons in all the systems, but at least there is still some sort of a sense of humour in the African one.

I have a friend who recently finished as CFI at a flying school 2000+ hours all instruction, white male, who has just been taken on at Rossair flying 1900's in Angola,so I guess it's more about how well you fair at the interview than so-called mobile goalposts. We work in a competitive industry, no point in crying unfair when we don't get the job we want!!!

BAKELA, Manamana, C4

Apologies but I am with C4 on this one.

It is not always easy, but weighing up all the options ie. politics, crime, family etc. It's an easy decision. My wife and kids are smiling here. Walk to school - play outside late at night - go wherever they want etc..

Footy is a different story of course but we have to live with that. But if you are in Rome do as the Romans do ((and I am not talking about sheep . They do that in NZ or so I am told.
I mentioned that the perception in SA is that Aussies are known as sheep ers but was told that is what they say here about the NZ'ers

I am seriously thinking of moving to oz in the next year or 2 with the wife and kids. How is the job situation there with regard to aviating.

I would appreciate any advice I could get as I have no contacts there at all.

Thanks

The grouching that I hear now, has not changed in the last 20 years. Only difference is that we as white males now use affirmative action as a crutch. I ask all those who have affirmative action gripes to name 5 and only 5 affirmative action people who have taken their jobs or any body elses job. .....................THOUGHT YOU COULDN"T.

The only AA taking place in this country in the aviation sector is in the national airline. This is expected, as the rules of the country dictate that, and there is pritty little that you or I can do about that. I DO NOT BELIEVE THAT AA IS FAIR OR JUST< BUT IT IS A REALITY WHICH WE HAVE TO DEAL WITH.

In answer to how interviews go, you sit with guys from the company for 20 minutes. Those selecting must make a choice, and some dont get in. Life is sometimes not fair, but you must try again, and whatever you do don't slag the company, as pub talk can get around.

Keep trying, and may the farts be with you.

Cave Troll

I suggest you have a look at the D&G forum and post your
question there.
Prepare yourself to be dissapointed, but if you do move to Oz
I wish you all the best.

Cave Troll,

As Edd said have a look at the DG sites. Unless you have spec experience in a field that let you stand out I would consider it carefully.

What's your background, experiences etc. PM me if you wish I'll try and give my opinion.

Slagging off Rossair

I'm constantly amazed at people who slag off Rossair (begining of this thread) when they fail to get employed, even though they have x number of hours and guys with less hours got the job etc etc.
Guys should realise that if your personality comes across badly in any interview your hours won't matter, alternativley other people might simply have done better in their interviews than you.

No one derserves a job just because they comply with an "hours" requirement.

Hopefully Rossair's hiring policy has changed. Used to be that they'd hire the next bloke through the door, regardless of qualifications (within limits, of course), because they needed someone yesterday. The stack of CVs on the CP's desk was too much trouble to go through and select a short list of candidates unless they needed someone with a specific rating (how I got in).

If that's changed it's for the better....

Gotta add it was the best flying I ever did. Loads of fun as long as Fingerless kept his neck wound in.
