I'll wait for the verdict. If Frans is guilty it doesn't matter how many great flights and strikes I had with him in the SAAF, if he did the crime he must do the time.

Just e-mailed some friends mentioned in Guns's report to find out hot gen.

Ok Guns, I understand. In my other life I have sent more than one Cop into the Gray Bar Hotel.........Not Fun.
But We are so quick to rush judgment, could be he will be found not guilty and that the 25 Kees was just for personal use........
I laugh at that sometimes as lots of these famous dudes get caught up in some major crap, get a good lawyer and skate. Then all their buds are back in the fold as if nothing ever happened..
Your sittin on 25 Kees your a Dope Dealer, no matter what your lawyer can buy or the jury says.........

I have just received a reply from Tamworth. It is true, Frans was arrested on Wednesday, and is awaiting a bail hearing in Sydney this coming Wednesday.

As reported by Gunns it all started in 2001 when Frans imported a container full of floor tiles he wanted to sell in Australia. He put Graham and Ian's name on the import permit application as well, that is why the other two were also busted, questioned and later released. Since 2001 neither Graham nor Ian have been affected again.

Since then they have apparently been taping/listening to Frans' telephone etc. Guess by last Wednesday they had heard enough to effect an arrest.

Frans claims he was framed and that the container had been tampered with. They are all hoping it is true.

Red face The "official" Afrikaans and English reports

Mnr. Frans Coetzee (46), 'n vlieginstrukteur by die BAE/Ansett-vliegkollege by Tamworth in Nieu-Suid-Wallis, is drie dae gelede by sy huis in Tamworth in hegtenis geneem.

Ex-SAAF pilot held for coke

Erika Gibson
Pretoria - A second South African may be extradited to Australia after police there arrested a former South African Air Force pilot for allegedly smuggling 25kg of cocaine with a street value of about R43m.

Frans Coetzee (46), a former air force Mirage pilot, is an instructor at the BAE/Ansett Aviation College at Tamworth in New South Wales. He was arrested at his home in Tamworth in the early hours of Friday morning.

If Coetzee is found guilty, he could be facing a life sentence.
His arrest comes after Australian police apparently had tapped his phone and intercepted his e-mails since April 2001.
A container with an large amount of cocaine arrived from South Africa in Sydney Harbour during this time. Police did not act immediately, but kept the suspects under surveillance to determine whether a larger smuggling network was involved.

SA police involved in operation
Senior Superintendent Mary Martins-Engelbrecht, a spokesperson for Interpol, said the Australian police have been working with the South African Narcotics Bureau (Sanab) for the past 18 months to expose the network.

Australian police visited South Africa to get information and documentation. The investigation will continue despite Coetzee's arrest.

No Australians have been arrested yet.
Martins-Engelbrecht said Australian police might ask for the extradition of at least one other South African. One of the other suspects is allegedly a member of Coetzee's family.

Coetzee appeared in the Tamworth Court on Friday on charges of drug trafficking and the possession of, and dealing in, drugs. The case will continue in Sydney this week because the alleged crime took place there.

Coetzee will be asked to plead then.
Coetzee was a lieutenant-colonel in the air force and had worked as a fighter-plane instructor at Hoedspruit air force base. He was a senior instructor at Air Force College in Thaba Tshwane before he resigned his commission in 1998.

He and two other South Africans, Ian Jones and Graham Rochat, have been flying at Tamworth College since 2000. Both Jones and Rochat were formerly instructors in the South African Air Force.

Rochat was also a flight safety officer at South African Airways after he left the air force. Australian police questioned him and Jones because of the South African connection.

Their homes were also searched, but they apparently knew nothing about the drugs.
Life sentence likely if guilty
Professor André Thomashausen of the University of South Africa's Centre for International Law said yesterday Coetzee probably would be sentenced to life in prison if he was found guilty.

"If he was caught in a country such as Thailand or Singapore with that quantity of drugs, he would undoubtedly have been sentenced to death."

Thomashausen said the Australian government probably would appoint a legal representative for Coetzee. "Australia has an excellent legal system and Coetzee will get a fair hearing."

Red face News From Australia

"Man accused of possessing cocaine remanded in Sydney court "

A 46-year-old man has appeared in the Tamworth Local Court on charges relating to the discovery of cocaine with a street value of almost $5 million.

Franz Johannes Van Coetzee, a South African national, who is living in Langens Lane, Tamworth, has been remanded in custody.

Coetzee has given his occupation as a pilot.

Police claim they discovered more than 24 kilos of cocaine in a self-storage facility in Sydney in April 2001, sparking a major investigation by New South Wales and federal police officers.

Police told the Tamworth Court that the drug had a street value of $4.8 million.

Coetzee was arrested in Tamworth and charged under the Drugs Misuse and Trafficking Act.

He has been charged with supplying and possessing drugs.

He has been remanded to the Sydney Central Court on January 24. "

Very Sad!!

I think that this is very sad indeed. I am sure that the Aussie Police would do extensive homework befoe arresting an innocent party, so for Frans it does not look too good.

I guess that thought of quick and easy bucks is the drawcard in this instance. I spend my life trying to teach my kids that there is no such thing as quick and easy bucks!

To protect the kids, I have absolutely no sympathy for anybody who deals in drugs of any kind. I hope that Frans is found innocent, as any respect I have for him currently will be very quickly lost!

Sad to think that another SA pilot has been drawn into the international arena as a dealer and smuggler of drugs! What kind of reputation are the SA drivers getting?

Its just what I mentioned above. They didnt guess he had dope. They did an investigation and Im sure the Probable cause was more than adequate to have him arrested. Those are the facts.......
Now if a Lawyer or a Jury aquits him on some issue, in your mind, hes just another victim of overzealous Police work and would be welcome in your circle of friends...regaining your respect...
Bottom line is guilty or innocent it appears he was sitting on 25 Kees...
As with a lot of these load mopes, many do not do drugs themselves. They are in it for the huge amounts of cash. 25 Kilos is not big time, but he was on his way. Im certain he started out smaller. Nobody fronts 25 Kilos to someone who has not proven himself.

Caught in the crossfire

Very sad news indeed to see that one of our own has succumbed to the "easy bucks " syndrome.
I agree with many of the above posts in that the police would not have arrested him if they had not done all the neccessary homework.I think that this case is as watertight as a ducks ........!

What concerns me is the innocent , namely Ian Jones and Graham Rochat being caught up in all this. I read from the news reports that they have been questioned and released , but the fallout is possibly going to have a far greater effect than just being released.

The stigma of being associated with drugs and smuggling in a foreign country will not just go away.

Sad, very sad.

How can you say, "very sad news". A couple of months ago you had a lot of very different comments for the SAA chap when he was caught with his package.

Now its your old SAAF buddy, and you are feeling sorry for him. Sounds very racial to me!!!

Don`t get me wrong, there is no place for drug smuggling in aviation, but please keep you comments consistent!

Unhappy

FF,

I first thought of not answering you, but why not ... there is OBVIOUSLY a difference between a friend that joined you as a young pilot, that shared single quarters, used to work on my car, flew on the same base for 7 years, got married a month apart, where young married couples on the same living a block apart, where professional pilots together for 8 years in the bush war and and ...

The other person is just a another number that I have not known other than the licence scam.

I say again : " ... Once again I say " 25 kg less that our kids can get hold of ... "

It has nothing to do with racism FF, I am definately not a racist please believe me

Last comments on this....

If Frans is found quilty and he was quilty ... rot in hell Frans ...

Amen (edit by Gunnss after a cool down period and PM explanations that we both agree upon - see FRIENDS again - tx FF)

Pilot "sold out" by partners

Sortie III, Sorry do not want to hi-jack your posting :

You made the link incorrectly bru, but I always post the whole article as News 24 is only available to foreign e-mail addresses but if you have a South African dail-up connection like Telkom and the likes you will not get access to News24 as you must be a Mweb subscriber .. ok ? So here goes the article :

News 24

Pilot sold out by 'partners'

So-called "business partners" of former South African flight instructor Frans Coetzee used him to smuggle drugs into Australia, his lawyer says.

The 46-year-old former fighter pilot instructor was arrested in Australia two weeks ago for alleged involvement in drug smuggling.

Police sniffer dogs during a routine search picked up traces of drugs in a Sydney warehouse rented in Coetzee's name. Police found 25kg cocaine hidden in a container with floor palettes Coetzee and his two American partners had imported from the US to Australia via South Africa.

Coetzee was released on R25 000 bail while the case is still under investigation.

No knowledge

Marius van Huyssteen, Coetzee's lawyer in Pretoria, on Tuesday said it seemed Coetzee never knew about the drugs, was never in possession of it nor traded in it.

He said Coetzee was implicated because he was involved in the import of the palettes for industrial use from America to South Africa two years ago.

When it became clear that there was no market in South Africa for the palettes, Coetzee and the American representatives exported the palettes to Australia in the hope of finding a better market.

Coetzee rented a warehouse in Sydney for storing the palettes. One of the containers in which the palettes were transported contained the drugs.

The Americans returned to the United States before police could arrest them.

Van Huyssteen said Australian police still had to decide whether to go ahead with the case against Coetzee. The case will be brought before court again on February 13 when police will hand the dossier over to the court.

"Meanwhile, Frans is back at work."

Known Frans for many years and I certainly hope for his sake that they get hold of these 2 Americans and get this whole mess sorted out one way or the other.
I believe he is innocent until proven beyond a shadow of a doubt that he is guilty.
