Places other than MAUN.
I know everybody says Maun is the place to try and get a job, but they won't be hiring till Xmas time.
My question is where else does a low hour Jaa pilot look for work in southern africa. Got the ticket booked to go down there, just need more places I could swing around and pester for work. Anything would be helpful

Mate, Maun is a $hit hole, you don't wanna go there for your first taste of africa. There are a heap of other places to go than Botswana. Eros Airport, Windhoek, Namibia is a good place to start, Swakopmund and walvis baai are also good, especially for meat bombers and aeronuts. Most of the flyingthere is done in 210s for pups, moving ontosome nice gear if yo good.
Zambia has a good wee industry going, as tourisim is just starting to pick up there, with Zim's percieved civil dismay. Once again, the 210/206 comes standard. I have heard that Zim is still going, and pilots are still sought, but havn't been there myself to have a look.
Whae ya get there, get USED to the phrase: "we'll be hiring soon, stick around, come back next week." When you get SICK of the phrase, get out.

If you can speak a bit of Francais, consider Franco phone Afrique...Libreville in Gabon, Duoala Cameroon, Abidjan Cote Ivore dont know about Ghana but its a nice place...

If you are in for a really exotic experience, try Congo for spice. It is a wonderful and cultured enviroment that just boggles ones mind.
In addition to the rebels that insists on calling themselves Ninjas, they have, out of the 10 worst diseases in the world, all 10. Including Hanta virus, Ebola and the highest HIV and AIDS rates in the whole world. WOW.
You can enjoy a positive and constructive work enviroment with well motivated and skilled international co-workers. That come from interesting corners of the world such as Iraq.
But if hours is what you are looking... Well then Western-Africa is your place as you can fly you hind off. Duty-and flight-time limitations... MEL,CDL What??? Mel Who?

Oh yeah... Mützig and N´Gok. My all time favourites. If you ever have problems with your digestion either of these wonderful fruits of Congo will help to flush your pipes open in no time.
Only good thing about this "Beer" is that it is easily available with a price of less than a dollar for a .5 liter bottle.
Actually I miss throwing rocks on roofs and scaring the guards kakless during the night. Oh yes and setting bushes on fire is in my list of "Miss em" too.
How ya doing with the kulis over in the pershwamarkabarakkabar or where the h.lll you are now?

So fly timair thinks mauns a ****hole. Fair enough each to his own opinion. But to reply to some of his advice, theres no work in Zimbabwe, unless your a zimbo (and the money is ****).
Zambia is a very small industry at the moment, and not much work going on. Namibia has a good industry going, but much harder to get into than Bots, SA pretty hard to get into as an expat. Which leaves maun as the best place for a low time expat to get work. even if it is a ****hole (though after living here for 4 years i quite like the place!)

Timair, forget Windhoek & Namibia mate, 36 guys just got retrenched and come the 1st of August, are going to be looking for new employment, guess where...yup, Eros airport, Windhoek.

Been here 10 months, no workpermit yet, still on 3 monthly visa's, got a ticket for not having a stupid sticker on me truck ,then while I have 2 on, they arrest me & throw me in jail, then my house gets burgled.....no way, Windhoek and the people in in sucks ass, bigtime.

sorry to butt in here guys, but have just been reading this thred and latley been thinking also of having a change scenery and going to Africa. Sounds like theirs some great flying to be had up there. Whats the job seen like for a Kiwi pilot with about 1100hrs (mostley airtransport and meatbombing) looking for an

Really, where else can you have a Hippo and a couple of Five metre crocs living fifty metres from your house, to go swimming with(once pissed and stoned of course!), or get 18 <natives> into a 206? The flying seems to teach you how not to kill yourself. I'm kinda missing those Audi Burgers, too!

Umm...don't quote me on this - I'm not really qualified to answer as I'm not based in Zambia, but every time I go there and chat to pilots and operators there it seems to me that Zambia has just had a booming season. Operators ordering new aircraft, pilots logging big hours etc... Things probably winding down about now, but I'm sure Zambia is expecting big things for next year.
My guess is though, unlike Maun, operators require pilots with 1000 hrs + and preferably with turbine and/or twin ratings.
