Self-fly safari companies with a twin. Any recommendations?
Hi there
I'm a UK-based private pilot interested in organising a self-fly safari in 2014. I’m also looking to build multi time in the process.
If there are folk out there who can recommend a self-fly safari company/flight school that operates safely and can be trusted, it would be appreciated. If anyone has had any bad experiences of cowboy outfits, that would also be useful to know.
Ideally I would be looking to rent a twin capable of lifting 6 adults and suitable for short field work around Africa on a safari. If it’s not possible to find such an aircraft (to rent), I’d still like to know if anyone can recommend a school/individual who run the usual candidates (barons/senecas/etc)

Grand idea to come to africa with your PPL and rent a plane for a personalized fly-in safari... but i'm afraid you're going to have a real hard time finding someone willing to rent you their light twin to build your multi time and practise short field work.... atleast not without a safety pilot tagging along with you the whole time. Then there's the issue of license conversion...

You want to build multi time which implies that your twin experience is limited? You want to take five people and yourself on an African safari into and out of short strips with, no doubt, a load of bags and photographic equipment. You have nil or at least limited African flight experience and nothing much in the way of hot and high, operational experience. You wish to find a self fly safari company that operates safely and can be trusted. Please might I beg your pardon and suggest that any such outfit might ask the same requirement of you but with a distinctly skewed eyeball as to the most likely outcome.

You surmised correctly. I am somewhat light on twin-time. About 75hrs on a Baron. However, the majority of those hours were short-field high-altitude flying in Alaska/Canadian Rockies, with a full aircraft (including camera gear).
I don't pretend to be anything like up to the standard of the real African bush flyers, but nor am I entirely new to some of the more challenging approaches. i'm looking for the opportunity to perform similar approaches with big game rather than brown bears waiting for us upon arrival.
