Air Rhodesia

Hi All,

I am trying to get some info for historical reasons (family was involved) Does anyone know about an Air Rhodesia flight that crashed in Sesheke in Zambia in 1978? An internet search shows two crashes in this period but none in Sesheke which is strange because it definitely happened!!

Thanks in advance.

Hi Mukosha, I'm an ex Zimbo and have no recollection of the crash you're looking for. Obviously the 2 Air Rhodesian aircraft lost around the same time were the 2 Viscounts Hunyani and Umniati shot down just outside Kariba in Sept '78 and Feb '79. It would have been highly unlikely a Rhodesian aircraft would have been flying over Zambia during this time ( unless it was of the air firce variety of course ). It could possibly have been off course perhaps flying from Vic Falls to Harare or Kariba perhaps but as far as I know there were no other Air Rhodesian crashes. My sister was a hostie around the time and she is unaware of any aswell having just sent her an sms. Hope this helps ..

Mukosha, I seriously doubt that there was ever such an incident.

If that had happened at the time it would have meant a major military operation to retrieve the crew and passengers and one can only imagine the mileage that the Zambians and ZIPRA would have got out of it. So of course it would be extremely difficult to cover up.

If you do find out anything further let us know but I think it' very unlikely.

Air Rhodesia only had two aircraft down, as mentioned, both were the result of terrorist attacks.

I think this is noteworthy and maybe there is even someone here who could attend.

The world needs to be reminded of the ongoing brutality of the type of people who did this.

An OPEN INVITATION is extended to all wishing to attend the historical Inauguration of the Viscount Memorial and Commemoration service at the Voortrekker Monument in Pretoria on Sunday, 2nd September 2012, commencing 11h00 to approximately 12h40.

Undoubtedly, the stature and presentation of this magnificent Memorial renders it to be of the most significant on the entire Property that will be visited by thousands of local and foreign nationals in time, while those who attend the unveiling and Inauguration ceremony will remember this special occasion for the measure of comfort and closure it brings.

The original programme has been amended. There will be a FLY-PAST and the Rhodesian flag will be flown at half mast as a token of National sorrow at the time and which still prevails now subsequent to Rhodesia's 9/11. It will also be the only flag to be hoisted and the Anthem has been replaced by the Hymn 'Abide with Me". Proceedings are designed to be as comforting as possible during the Commemoration and Consecration of the Memorial. Tributes will be paid to honour the 107 Victims and their Relatives who have lived with the trauma of losing their loved ones for so many years, without the privilege of a suitable place to pay homage to the Victims. In addition, tributes will also be paid to the various Military Units for their part in bringing the perpetrators to book. Although this wont bring full closure, it will serve to live a bit better with the pain knowing that justice was served and by having this magnificent Memorial to ensure that THEY SHALL BE REMEMBERED.

For those able to attend, please be aware of the following guide to proceedings.

Dress code: Civilians and Military Veterans: Lounge suit or Association Dress with beret, decorations and medals
Ladies: Hats optional, but recommended for own protection.

MAP: Attached is a map of how to find the Memorial. Please look for signboards marked VISCOUNT posted along the final approaches to the turn-off into the Voortrekker Monument.

Entrance to the Event is free of charge - please stipulate you are attending the Viscount Memorial when arriving at the gate house.

Parking:
Please follow the road after leaving the gate house to arrive at the designated parking area near the Memorial. The car park will be
CLOSED AT 10h50 to avoid late arrivals and disruptions to proceedings.

Flowers and Wreaths:
In order to facilitate correct wreath and flower laying arrangements, you are cordially requested to hand wreaths and flowers in at the Memorial no later than 09h30.

Seating:
Guests are cordially requested to arrive by not later than 10h15 and to be seated by not later than 10h50.

Programme:
A special Commemoration Booklet with the full programme and other information will be provided free of charge and limited to ONE copy per Attendee's only. Please RSVP 'booklet' to [email protected] no later than 12h00, Friday 31st August 2012.
Additional booklets can be ordered by the public @ R25 per copy excluding postage.

Tea / Coffee and light refreshments are available from the Avocado Restaurant at own cost.
A buffet lunch is available at own cost at the Monument's Restaurant situated in the Amphitheatre.

I went to the Voortrekker Monument on Friday and visited the adjacent Air Rhodesia Memorial.

It´s a little hard to find, a few hundred metres to the west of the main memorial and off the main path up a slight incline. It is not signposted or shown on the maps that they give out at the entrance to the site.

Standing before the memorial and looking at the names of the 107 people murdered in these two atrocities, mostly families returning from holidays at Lake Kariba, brings home the brutality and sickness of the ZIPRA thugs who carried out these attacks on the innocent. Sadly the same idealogy still exists in Southern Africa today and some of their supporters are still in positions of power and sowing hatred.

I spent an hour in the Voortrekker Monument too, it´s been many years since I last went, and in the light of subsequent events in South Africa, it increases my respect for what the Afrikaaners achieved, even if some of their methods were flawed.

For the information of anyone who may be interested and able to go :

News of the Commemoration Event and Unveiling of the Viscount Memorial on 2nd September 2012 has spread around the world, and continues to do so, but doing that only once is not enough. The Memorial is just the first step to ensure that the Viscount Victims SHALL BE REMEMBERED. Now it is up to us [...]
Meantime, here is an OPEN INVITATION to the Viscount Umniati Remembrance day, taking place at 12:00 noon on 9 February 2013 at the Viscount Memorial situated at the Voortrekker Monument in Pretoria.

We are hoping to attract 1,000 people help break the deafening silence about Rhodesia’s 911, hushed up at the time by Western leaders for the lack of moral courage to condemn these heinous atrocities against mankind, to save their political carriers for supporting the revolutionary forces of Robert Mugabe and Joshua Nkomo to overthrow the Rhodesian Government in the pseudo name of peace and freedom,

The Service will be led by Lt. Colonel, the Reverend Bill Dodgen – the Military Chaplain of the then Rhodesian Armed Forces. Our Master of Ceremonies is the famous Rhodesian musician, Mike Westcott, who will control the program, specially designed to help transform sadness and sorrow to consolation and closure. To that end, the audience may be seated to enjoy two hymns played by the full Benoni High School Pipe Band with beautiful singing by Members of their Choir. (The BHS has won first place in school Pipe Band competitions for over 20 years).

After the service, the 30 piece Pipe Band will lead us to the Recreation (picnic) area for a social gathering and braai, after which the draw for Craig Bone’s painting worth R 100,000 will take place. We are still trying to organise a fly-over between 2pm and 3pm, but this may not be possible due to time and budget constraints. Anyone with a spare Alouette helicopter, Dakota, Vampire and Hawker Hunter is extremely welcome to contact us ASAP.

More information follows – but interested persons are well advised to register on our website Viscount Down to receive our FREE newsletters bringing constant updates to your attention.

Many thanks, Keith Nell and The Viscount Memorial Team.
