I went to the Voortrekker Monument on Friday and visited the adjacent Air Rhodesia Memorial.

Itīs a little hard to find, a few hundred metres to the west of the main memorial and off the main path up a slight incline. It is not signposted or shown on the maps that they give out at the entrance to the site.

Standing before the memorial and looking at the names of the 107 people murdered in these two atrocities, mostly families returning from holidays at Lake Kariba, brings home the brutality and sickness of the ZIPRA thugs who carried out these attacks on the innocent. Sadly the same idealogy still exists in Southern Africa today and some of their supporters are still in positions of power and sowing hatred.

I spent an hour in the Voortrekker Monument too, itīs been many years since I last went, and in the light of subsequent events in South Africa, it increases my respect for what the Afrikaaners achieved, even if some of their methods were flawed.
