No reply from SACAA...pls help!

Hi All,

Apologies in advance, someone must have asked this question before but I just can't find it in the search function. SACAA also no help.

All help and advise appreciated.

I started a SAPPL in Feb 2009 which I had half completed before being forced to return to the UK. However I was fortunate enough to have my odd 30 hours from SA credited towards my JAAPPL. I now hold a JAA PPL. That all said, I have a SA CAA student pilot license number and also already passed some of the SA exams.

My question though, I have now returned to SA, working here but now have a JAA PPL which I understand how to validate. However my question, once validated, how do I go about enrolling for SACPL? I want to sit the CPL exams....in other words acquire my SACPL. Some CFI gave my one heck of a complicated explanation but it really feels, he just want to squeeze me for everything I've got!!! Pls help guys....I really want to complete my commercial training whilst working graveyard shifts

You don't need the SACAA...

Go to a flight school. There you can complete an Air Law* exam and do some local training with an Instructor (GradeII) - he can perform the relevant check ride with you and only then will the SACAA issue you a license. Once you have that, you qualify and can kick off your CPL groundschool or practical training, although I would recommend finishing off all the theory stuff first.

*If Air Law is one of the subjects you already have, you actually do not have to do anything for theory - just go ahead with the practical SA PPL - hours are variable, depending on your flying skills i.e. you have to satisfy the instructor.

Pls differentiate btw validation and conversion of your JAA PPL. I assume you need a conversation to start your CPL training? (I haven't checked.)
Details can usually be found on the CAA website and be deducted in exact detail from the relevant checklists as well as the relevant forms.

During validation of my JAR PPL, I also made the experience that the guys at the flight schools wanted me to go "their way", whatever this means. Some were simply not up to date with the latest SA AIC. Example: For the PPL validation, according to AIC, you only have to write the exam conducted by an Approved Training Organisation but not the computerized one. Instead, some flying schools insisted on the computerized one (as for SA licence holders) and wanted me to get a student number for such test from the CAA. CAA refused as they do not issue student numbers for such validation as you only have to undergo a written test try to explain this, as a foreigner, to the relevant CFI...

About two years ago when I was validating my JAA PPL, there was a lady at the CAA who was of big help (but I showed up at her office before). Neo Tigile ([email protected]). Answer took some days but it's may be worth a try.

Ok -

1. you do need a SAPPL in order to start SACPL - Validation will not suffice.

in order to get this,

2. you can validate you JAR PPL by writing an Air Law test and getting yourself signed out by a Grade II after a flight test.

3. Then you enrol and train for an SAPPL which entitles you to a student pilots number. You do a greatly reduced practical training syllabus which you have to negotiate with the CFI and after completing that, do another PPL flight test with the Grade II - (I took a total of 4 hours in a C152 just to familiarize with the requirements and local environment - I had experience of about 100 hours PIC, so it was a walk in the park, the only new thing for me was to learn spinning). You then send the paperwork to the CAA and they will issue you the brown booklet.

4. Then everything else for the blue booklet applies like every other CPL student.
