New Series 400 Twin Otter at HKNW Wednesday night (Jan 12)

Hello All:

I will be passing through Nairobi Wilson this coming Wednesday evening with a brand new Series 400 Twin Otter - will post details of when, where, etc. tomorrow.

If anyone is interested in having a look, perhaps we can arrange some kind of open house around 5:00 PM local time.

Let me know (here on this thread) if you are interested.

Michael

Descending into Iraklion, Greece earlier this evening

Is the new one any faster?

On the old 200 and 300 hundreds we flew at 125 kias...(If I remember correctly..?)

The manufacturer (i.e. the documentation) does not claim that it is any faster, but looking at the picture above, you can see that we were doing 143 KIAS at 9,000 feet in level flight.

Typical cruise TAS on the flight from Vancouver Island to here (at this moment, Greece) has been 170 knots. At altitudes above FL 100, cruise power has to be reduced to avoid exceeding the Vmo.

Thursday morning would work, but not too late. We depart for Seychelles Thursday, need to stop in Mombasa to get some fuel, and I want to arrive in Seychelles before dark.

We have been delayed by one day (due to late arrival of an overflight permit). I'm still in Sharm el Sheik at this moment (Tuesday night). Will be overnighting in Djibouti Wednesday, and arriving at HKNW early in the afternoon Thursday.... so, no more worries about seeing the plane, because we will now be overnighting HKNW on THURSDAY night, not Wednesday as originally planned.

Have a good flight

Are Capt. Young or Quilindo with you on the flight? Fly safe!
What routing did you take since leaving Victoria? That must have been a very cool flight from Canada to Sez!
Cheers

Very nice. Equipment must be a great improvement on the old clocks. I have to ask myself though is it really worth doing all these upgrades to a rough old work horse. I think it has lost a bit of character. It is a bit like trying to put a V8 is an old mini. The fact that the original twotter flew low, slow and was ugly as sin made it a classic. Not so sure about this one though.

Think about it - there will always be a market for a rugged STOL workhorse with docile handling and good load carrying capacity.
Why else would people like Gipsland be trying to muscle in on the Twotter's market niche.

There are plenty of islands and bush strips where others cannot go.
Plus, of course, it's a damn nice aircraft to fly for pilots with a sense of adventure.

Well, consider that when Boeing made the first 747 (the 100 series) back in the late 1960s - within a year or two of when de Havilland made the first Twin Otter - the flight compartment of the 747 looked pretty primitive - round dials everywhere, 3 person crew, etc.

Boeing is now making 400 Series 747s and they have a pretty modern looking flight compartment. Viking is now making 400 Series Twin Otters, and they also have a pretty modern looking flight compartment.

.

Beautifully said. Its great to see her being revived with a bit of a facelift thrown in. Long may she continue to boldly go where no airplane has gone before!:

It is not Garmin, it is Honeywell Primus Apex. Apex is a 'small aircraft' derivation of the Epic systems used in the larger Gulfstreams and Falcons.

Heard that some of the new honewell equipment did not make it to the new owners, apparently some components failed and had to be replaced during a stop over in Switzerland.

I suppose the "old clocks" could also have failed on the delivery flight

A data acquisition unit (a single LRU) was replaced during a pre-planned tech stop at the factory service center in Switzerland. This was a 're and re' operation... unplug the existing unit, install the new unit, and then plug it in.

Having said that... Van Der, exactly what axe do you have to grind against the new aircraft? Looking at your last three posts (out of a total of ten posts made by you), each of those last three posts have contained a criticism, an insinuation, or a bit of malicious gossip about the new Twin Otter. What exactly is your agenda, and why do you have this chip on your shoulder? It it possible that we have met in the past - perhaps when I was doing safety audits unrelated to Viking Air, and you were working for a South African based contractor - and I have discovered and written up something that embarrassed or upset you?
