I may be making a visit to Conakry, Guinea later as an Engineer for a few weeks. Have never been there. Any info, I should be aware off, would be a benefit.

Firebird, I know people working in Guinea for the mining sector, I have lived in Guinea myself for about 5 years in the 80's... was a nice place!

But, be aware that right now, the political situation over there is not good at all, elections have again set things on fire a little... for now at least...

I know workers who wont go back to work for at least a few more weeks because of the bad situation over there.

I would suggest you to wait a bit for the situation to calm down before thinking to go over there, not the best moment at all .

Btw, hi to everyone (first post), very informative place, have been reading here for many months ... I'm more a reader than a wirter but when I see I can help :P

Firebird, not knowing your own background, experiences, or temperament it's hard to say whether or not this would be right for you, but if you need work and they're offering it now, I wouldn't refuse then out of hand or based on the current political situation in Guinea. In short, I wouldn't overly fear for my own safety. I started in Guinea in 1999 and spent 6 months there at that time. I'm now in another country adjacent to Guinea and fly there weekly. Further, we have a crew based there and I sometimes have to fill in, meaning I spend some nights, and a few weeks there on a regular basis. Guinea is very poor and poorly developed, but things are looking up. I can't tell you there won't be some civil unrest as things normalize after the election, but they will normalize and the likelihood of you being caught up in any of it is actually quite small. The biggest irritations in Conakry are the frequent power interruptions (hours daily) and slow internet service. A good housing situation will have a well managed generator and the best internet available, such as it may be. If you need the work and the terms are fair and acceptable to you, I say go.

Skinned Alive

I did a stint in the Eastern region of Giunea a couple of years ago. Fortunatlty i flew in/out through the back door. But other expats who flew into Conakry, heading to where i was based were skinned alive at the airport. Baggage, tools, credit cards, everything except the clothes they were wearing.

Just to let you know, people I know who work in Guinea are going back this week, so things must not be that bad over there, the company they work for is Canadian and they would never compromise the safety of their people... And they fly trough Konakry.

So I would agree with NG Driver, if there is something for you there, pack up and go!

No National Carrier. Only Guinean operator actually flying is a small outfit with an old Let 410.

Guinea Conakry has just inaugurated its new Flag Carrier, it seems...will operate inside Africa with 320, and will acquire in near future a 340 to start European routes...Here its new 320, already in 3X- Marks...Money comes from Chinese funds!

Living In Guinee

I am originally From Guinee and live in Phoenix, AZ. i Think u shouldn't worry about going there at all except putting up with living in a third world country. Election is now over and done we are expecting a an economic boom i am getting ready to go fly for Air Guinee International as soon as its begin operation. See u there !!!!!
