SAA Strike and crew being threatened at parking lot
Hey chaps, any news of this? A mate of mine's sister is a hostie at SAA and apparently its riot city down there, with people being attacked in the car park by the rioting (striking?) masses... Holy s
t, only in africa. Wonder if the blokes in the seats know the cabin crew serving them their morning coffee has to go through a bloody quasi war zone to get to work in the morning? Also, why is no one aware of this, why is nothing said about this and lastly, why the hell is nothing being done about it. Suppose they'll wait until someone is mortally wounded or raped and then have a convention, 40 meetings, then a resolution will be implemented and by the time one if the beaurocrats get off his fat ass to implement the aforementioned resolution through 7 committees its 6 months down the line and more innocent bystanders screwed. Appaling to say the least.

All crew may no longer use the parking lots as tires have been slashed and bricks thrown through windows..before leaving the building the must remove scarves and hair must be loose...all crew vehicles are parked in the technical division for safety reasons...This is what my mother goes through everyday

The ground crew (check-in) etc. are on strike. SAA has outsourced part of the check-in to ground handling companies. Tw weeks ago, when we checked in at JHB we ended up in front of a check-in agent, without uniform. While sitting in his chair like I sometimes do after 23 beers when watching the rugby on a saturday afternoon, he informed us (chewing gum), that he is actually on strike, in order to protect his job??!!??!??!
All the other check in agents (not SAA staff) looked pretty neat, service was professional, friendly (for a change) and quick (for a change). Looks like, the ground handling company's staff is better in representing the airline then their own staff is. And it is most probably a cheaper deal for SAA, too.

A quote from someone who's been on this continent long enough to recognise a situation evolving in front of him... because he watched it just north of us nearly 3 decades ago - "What one person receives without working for.... another person must work for without receiving." They will get what they want, because they will continue to strike and burn and destroy property until they get their way. One has to remember that democracy is only about a century old on this continent (2 or 3 generations) - the idea is great, but the practicality is really too hard! Much easier to revert to smashing and destroying rather than discussing and reaching a mutually agreeable solution (without loss of face).
PS - If you thought the building contractors had them over a barrel when they downed tools on the stadiums (a few times)... can you imagine what this lot is going to get up to as we near 2010 and ACSA want to keep all the airports open 24/7 so they can move 50,000 people from A to B every 2 or 3 days? Best you fasten your seatbelts!

Last week when the mass action was in full swing and the crew had to be bussed from the crew centre to their parking (about 150 metres), I saw one Chris Smyth in action. He was checking on the crew, talking to them in the busses,making sure they were safe. Lots of apologizing etc, and promising to resolve the situation as soon as possible. A small gesture I know but really appreciated. Light? Tunnel?
I'm sure Khaya wouldn't have even bothered to cut his golf short to be there.

What a pity that CS is not black, (or holds the lofty title of Colonel) because he's occupying ANOTHER position that should/will go to another deserving party (ANC) comrade.
Africa's not for sissies. I just wish that they were not so incredibly predictable! Just a smidgeon of surprise would be so refreshing.

30 million unemployed unskilled locals in SA. If they don't want to work, I'm sure there will be many willing to take their jobs. They should be gratefull they have jobs.

A Zimbabwean arrives in Jo'burg as a new immigrant in South Africa . He stops the first person he sees walking down the street and says, Thank you Mr. South African, for letting me in this country, and giving me free housing, food, free medical care, affirmative action job and free education!"
But the passer-by says, "You are mistaken, I am a Nigerian. I'm just here for the free medical care"
The man goes on and encounters another passer-by "Thank you for having such a beautiful country here in South Africa !"
The person says, "I'm not South African, I'm from Mozambique . I'm just here for the free housing"
The new arrival walks further and the next person he sees he stops, shakes hands and says, "Thank you for the wonderful South Africa!" That person puts up his hand and says, "I am from Botswana , I am not a South African .I'm just here for the free education"
He finally sees a lady and asks suspiciously, "Are you a South African? She says, "No, I am from Ghana !"
So he is puzzled and asks her, "Where are all the South Africans?" The Ghana lady looks at her watch, shrugs, and says..."Probably at work!"
