quite an interesting read....we forget that even the most sophisticated instruments fail and its the very basic navigation 101 and of course ice cold nerves that save the day

From a friend of mine who was listening in - Turkish was diverting from Libreville to Lagos due to dest wx.

It would be interesting to see the results of the investigation? Is there one?

If they were skulling around at 2 to 5 thousand feet nav aid reception might have been problematic?

Sure the "monday morning" quarterbacks will have questions on decisions made. Don't matter. Crew stayed calm, followed airmanship procedures, made a plan and stayed with it and considered backup option of ditching.

Got the the aircraft safely on the ground.

That part of the world isn't the best place for "something" that disorientated the crew to happen.

If it turns out it was a crew navigation imput error or equipment failure, stuff happens and they dealt with it.

Doesn't matter how many "other ways" it could have been done. Crew took care of business.

Kenya Airways saves Turkish from Crashing

Hasnt come much in the media-

It could have been a fatal accident with 196 onboard. Some years later Discovery and National geographic channel would have made up an accident investigation documentary, But thank god all of them and plane was saved. Fuel remaining was 10 minutes when the the turkish pilots were suggested to ditch the plane but something happened and the turkish pilots finally spotted an airport and headed for it.

Anybody has more insight to this? Any related experiences in your carreer???

Here is the link:

Congrats to the Kenyan Crew for being of assistance. KQ is a regular visitor to the west african region compared to other foreign carriers.

Someone also commented- Also Turkish pilots and crew are to be appreciated for their incredible landing almost without any navigation instruments, in night, in a new geography, in a new destination and with a very limited fuel endurance when just some seconds are left to the end of everything of for them

For those of you who are pilots, you guys understand how critical it is when you have 10 min of fuel remaining.
Pray for God to help us all wherever we are in at all times.

Bizarre!

Well done to all involved.

My concern though is how could this be, that they lost all navigation instruments and communications radios on their approach into lagos.

Quote from CAA OF Togo.

"The Civil Aviation Authority of Togo reported the following day, that the airplane had lost all navigation instruments and communication radios"and then,

"Turkish Airlines confirmed the report by Togo's CAA and continued, that a maintenance crew was flown to Lome to examine the aircraft and identify the cause of the failure, but "nothing important" was found. The airplane then flew to Lagos and performed the return flight TK1124 to Istanbul with 182 passengers, arriving in Istanbul on August 16th"

Could such a failure of complete loss of Nav's, radios and standby instruments be possible on this aircraft (A310-300).... anyone with experience on this machine!!! ...would help?

And secondly what kind of fuel load was flight TK1123 from Istanbul (Turkey) to Lagos (Nigeria) with 196 pax carrying out of Istanbul to Lagos?

1. TRIP
2. CONTINGENCY
3. ALTERNATE
4. FINAL RESERVE

Not palatable news at all. Lucky I say! I can only commend the crew from Kenya Airways.
