...and then define "Africa".
It really varies from country to country. Iīve mostly been In Nigeria and even in that one country the feeling of "safety" varies with location.
Pretty much any location in Africa can give you a severe case of the willies if you let your imagination run riot.
Having said that, the last time I left Africa I made myself a promise never to return. Itīs nasty.

EPIRB - as long as you're a good shot; have high walls and electric fences; happy to live in 'gated' communities; don't mind US style shopping malls - all imaginatively named after compass points with '-gate' as a suffix (except Sandton City of course) - the lifestyle is great!
