Tanzanian License Conversion
Hey,
I am heading across to Tanzania for a job interview and was wondering what is involved in converting my Australian license to a Tanzanian one? I have searched the forum without any luck. Any info would be much appreciated.

watch out...
You need to do medical, aviation law and some other exams and a Type rating exam.
to guarantee pass mark in your exams you must pay some US dollars to the guys at the caa. . i think the guy at the desk is called wilson.
Then you need to get some hours (about 20) in the Type after which, funny enough, you take a flight test. Yes, you must have flown and logged hours in Tanzania before you can take a flight test to 'convert' your licence to a Tanzanian one.... Hmmmm

Its not that hard. You'll have to do an airlaw exam, make sure you study the regs and not the AIP plus talk to a bunch of other pilots who have done it recently. A technical type rating (TTR) exam is required for each aircraft. You just have to study the manual off by heart. Usually a C206 is the easiest. Then a flight test needs to be done but its not too bad and if you have a pass in airlaw and a TTR a company will give you a flight test. If you start bribing from the beginning you'll be bribing all the time. Be courteous and don't lose your cool. Bring about 1000USD and plan for 3weeks to a month as exams are only done on thursdays. If the guy I had to deal with has not kicked the bucket yet then you can organise you licence for about $100,it was enough to get met going 5 years ago (so you probably need $500 now),he was called Bryson,very INTELLIGENT guy who speaks very softly due to being used to bribing poor,low-time bushwackers who needs a start to their career.The medical is done nearby the CAA and you'll have to take a dump in a plastic bowl,no one knows what they are looking for,a S@#t situation to be in in a foreign country!You'll get pushed into a corner an asked to read the letters on the wall with the light being very low,I thought I was going blind after that,your blood pressure will be taken and you will ALWAYS be fine to fly,that's the cool thing about Africa,no problem and there's beer which is cold in the most remote places that you could use to drown your sorrows/frustration in.
I'm being a bit negative I suppose but Tanzania is a great place to work in once you get everything in place,make sure that no one intimadtes you to fly an undermaintained aircraft,I have almost been killed catching a lift with some oke to Dar from Mwanza in a C206,the thing had a mag-drop larger than a plane with one sparkplug!!He just tuned the tower "ready for take-off" after the plane shuddered and shook when he checked the Magnetos,I said " I am outta here".
Who are you going to fly for?Hopefully not that dodgy oke in Mwanza who sweet talks you and then tries to get you to fly in bad weather conditions and overweight,the company has a 206,Seneca II and PA 28-140,would'nt you love to fly that piece of "Sheisse"?
Anyway,enjoy it there while you last and go fishing in the lake,visit Serengeti,eat Tilapia-at the Tilapia hotel and so on should you be in Mwanza.

My mate just got that Islander job in Mwanza a few days ago! Does anyone know what the present job availability is like there at the moment?
I don't want to move out there and convert the license to find out the market is flooded with too many pilots.....cheers!

Jack, i offered him the job, there are always places for baby pilots, tourist season starts in may so people will be looking.
Mebro, we are not the one with the bad rep, there was ren-air here, but they left ages ago, but the other one is still here, no names, no pack drill (A
C), and are well known for scimping on maint!
Not been to TCAA recently but no one has seen bryson for a while, shame, good lad

Cheers Brat! I'll be 700TT at the end of this month but I hope I'll find something, just sick of this hellhole country called the United States, shoppping in Walmart today just finished it for me, lol!

Oh yeah, one more thing.
I'm planning on returning to the UK for a week and was thinking if I will need a Tanzanian visa if I go out or is okay to sort it out once I'm there!
