Any one from Sao Tome & Principe ?

Hi

Had a friend whom I met in Texas USA around 1989/90, both of us were doing US ATP Licence at ForthWorth Meacham Field, he was flying for his native airline there in the Islands in West Africa.

Forgot his name for now but If any one from there maybe I can give further details.

Would love to know where he is ? by then there were just 5 pilots natives from the Island itself.

Im from Tanzania.

The las time I was there, about 3 years ago there was absolutely nothing happening, except a military coup. Only scheduled service was Air Portugal, twice a week.

That's it sorry

I was there briefly in late 90's. There was a Let410 operating a schedule Libreville/Sao Tome/principe didn't meet the crew. There was also an aircraft F406 operated by IHDC Hotels on the same routes. There was an Icelandic guy whom I nearly took over from. I think they subsequently got an Emb110.
Dunno if its still there.

I was a Fort Worth Meacham Field back in 1976 finishing up a Commercial then an Instrument Rating a Multi with Acme School of Aeronautics. Dual instrument instruction in a 172 with an instructor was $ 24 dollars an hour. It costs a bit more now, I guess.

R U still flying in TZ Zenj? If so how have things progressed since then? I trained in Illinois, Centralia during 91. I briefly emerged in TZ in 97 & 98 looking for work, but no luck.

Would that be the same national airline currently advertising for B737-200 capts/co-pilots? Are they actually insisting on type rated crew?

Yes its the one just advertised looking for pilots.Air Tanzania

From their adverts it does not show that they need type rated pilots, which makes me think probably they will train and bond or deduct the costs.

Give a try by applying as per the advert on flight international.

I don't have the 500 multi, only 330. Difficult to believe when I started flying in 1991! What is the deal for a F/O starting this time? Anyway I think I might need to do another stint in air charter first to get some recent multi experience.

I'm currently working as a flying instructor, single engine.

Sao Tome e Principe

Baron Von M.....

When I was flying in West Africa in the late 90's I also came across the Big Scandanavian (Chris) and had more than a few beers with him in the Marlin Beach Hotel, and boy did he like beer in that hot climate! In fact happy hour (on a Thurs I seem to recall) was always the precursor to a trip up into the mountains to Club33 in Trinidade and more beer

The IHDC aircraft was a Reims Cessna F406 reg S9-IHD and used to fly mostly between Libreville, Sao Tome and Principe. The odd flight to Luanda, Accra and also Malabo and Bata were also done

The Russians who set up Air Cargo Sao Tome with a Let 410 UVP E included the boss Alexander and the one captain I remember was Andrei M. The aircraft was S9-CAL

The local Air Sao Tome Twotter was always on the other side of the apron when I was there and didnt get to meet the crew who used to do the same routes as the F406 i.e TMS-LBV-TMS and TMS-PCP-TMS.

The only other aircraft based there was the CASA of the Portugese Airforce
which didnt appear to do very much.

Ahhh happy days

I seem to remember Kris fininshing with a session on whiskies. I wonder where he is now? Hopefully he's reduced his intake a bit!!

Your memory seems a better than mine, but then I was only there two weeks. I was due to take over from Kris, but for a reason I never found out the MD changed his mind and I was freighted back out!

Where were you based, Libreville?

Baron Von M...

Ahh yes, Kris and his whisky I'd forgotten about that! All that alcohol and the food cooked for the guests on happy hour nite that only got so far around the bar before it was all gone.I seem to remember Kris showing me his own personal web site on t'internet with details on him and his family but I don't have the details anymore. Quite a bit of Googling came to nought.

I was technically based in TMS but spent most of my life flying anywhere between Ghana to the north(ish) and Lanseria in RSA. Basically where I was told to go I went!

Africa - a great experience, fabulous sights and sounds and more than one brush with death. Character building stuff but no place to make a long term career

Rgds

Thanks for the response.

This guy is not called Cassandra, its unfortunate that I do not remember his name. He is black, had a beard and he was young, when he returned to Sao Tome and Principe after doing his ATP in USA, he sent me a snap by post showing his wife and his kids.

He told me that they were just 2 or 3 pilots who are nationals of their country.

Maybe I will see the snap one day from my junk, and be able to tell his name.

Thanks I will give it a try, I remember we had spanish friends and he was well conversant in portuguese and was able to talk to them, need more effort to get further details.

Tanzania has radar from Dar-Es-Salaam Airport extending to about a maximum of 200 miles and on the northern side around Kilimanjaro, DAR CONTROL gives transponder codes but actually its Kenyan Radar thats using those codes to monitor traffic.

The rest of the country is covered by VHF Radio separated half by Dar Centre West 119.30 and Dar Centre East 123.30.

Its quite controllable for us flying above FL290 in terms of traffic conflict but might be a problem a day they decide to implement RVSM.

At least I remember one name of Louis but Im not sure if it was a nickname or not, when he was at Acme Flying School at Meacham Field he did his ATP on Beech Baron while I did on C172, at the same school.

I just checked my USA Visa , it shows I was in on 21 Sept 1989 and was there for 2 weeks.

Zenj,

A bit of a long shot in trying to contact your friend but worth a try. When I was in Sao Tome in the late '90's I knew quite a few of the local ENASA officials and I still have a business card from one of the guys in the tower. If the fax number is still current and if you can get a letter written in Portugese explaining what you want then this may work No harm in trying!!

The fax number for the tower is 239 12 21 154.

Hope it works, good luck
