Question Work in Africa?

Hi all!!

Has been a while since I searched the african (read: East African) market for possible jobs, but it's quite difficult without actually go down there and show up.

When I found this forum I thought it may be a good possibility to get some information about how to start and where to go.

What I came up to was that Wilson Airport, Nairobi could be a good place to start.....??
Anyway....as I read through this forum I understand that many companies prefer to hire local pilots....? How are the possibilities for foreigners to work as pilots in Africa?

So.....if any of you out there are able to help me with some information, I would really appreciate it!!!!

I'm currently working as an Aircraft Mechanic and also as a Flight Instructor with the local flying club (460 TT).

Any type of pilot jobs are of interest

Regards

The thing about Kenya is that most foreign operators are forced to re-register their aircraft 5Y due to the Kenyan CAA requirements. Therefore 5Y rated pilots are required.

What spice means is that you will need to convert your license to a Kenyan one. If you search this forum or posts under my user name you will find out the requirements.

Having said that I know of at least 5 Kenyan CPL/Multi/IR holders who are jobless...so you will need to be well connected to both get a flying job and your work permit.

I understand Tanzania is an easier bet.

Thumbs up

Thanks a lot for your replies guys!!

I believe there are a lot of unemployed kenyans, and that the kenyan CAA/government prefer those guys to lower that number....

I thought I had to convert to an "East African Licence", which is valid in more countries than only Kenya...is that correct...?

I hold a Norwegian CPL/IR/MEL/ATPL-theory.......Do you know if it is the same process to convert national licences, as it is for a JAA...?

Do I get the picture correct....
I can't get a licence without having a work permit.....but can I get a work permit without having a "go" from any company that I can start to work for them....? I guess I can't get a job without a licence so........?

Thanks again

No such thing as an "East African Licence". You would need to validate/convert your licence for each country's aircraft you fly. There seems to be a pervading myth around that you can get an African licence that covers everything on the continent. In some countries, admittedly, that would consist of a US$100-00 bill but most will give you a hard time if you roll up with that attitude. Best is to jump through the hoops like a good little poodle and get on with your career.

good luck, whatever you decide.....

However, if you do get your license converted to say a Kenyan one, the process for getting a Tanzanian or Ugandan one is made so much easier as all you have to do is sit for the airlaw exam and vice versa when applying for a Kenyan CPL when holding a Ugandan or Tanzanian CPL.
