Observations from the local controller audio archive and ADS-B data:
Accident aircraft (N384SC) had completed a touch and go on 16L
On the departure leg, 4SC reported “some power loss”
LC queried if assistance required
4SC requested “priority landing”
4SC pilot doing the comms was not a primary English speaker, constraining comms with LC
LC cleared 4SC to land 34R, which would have been a teardrop maneuver
LC requested nature of emergency
4SC reported “exhaust gas [?] issue” [best guess, transmission not clear]
LC cleared 4SC to land on any runway
4SC flew a northerly heading at low altitude over the east side of the airport, culminating in a tight, left half-spiral to the crash site. Last recorded groundspeed was 43 knots.
