But proposed cuts should never pass without comment about waste. Much of the defence budget can be considered "fixed" commitments. Equipment procurement is an easily targeted variable, except things like PFI payments. This makes the Billions worth of waste in recent years even more critical, exacerbated by the policy and practice that this waste is never investigated.
Ah yes, Private Finance Initiatives. The gift that keeps on giving. I wonder exactly what value for money they provide when you consider the levels of service provision against the financial costs. If the MOD PFIs are as bad as some of the NHS ones where they cant afford to run the shiny new hospitals because of the charges, then you have to ask 'really???' And yet at the individual level we throw the book at people for 'wasting money' on staying in the wrong hotel at a conference or refuse MT requests because of an arbitrary decision that the journey doesn't fit the scope of the JSP. What is it they say - if you're going to tell a lie, tell a big one.
