Remarkable that the council didn't figure out that Airport Way is at its busiest during the next 6 weeks.

UPDATE: The proposed wordworks have since been postponed.

Portfolio Holder for highways Cllr Paul Castleman said: "Following a review of the road improvement programme currently taking place in Luton we are keen to avoid the possibility of any avoidable further pressures being brought to bear on the road network at what is a peak time for the airport and holidaymakers."

It was this weekend last year that the airport closed its 4 lane drop off zone with the barriers at the end of each lane and replaced them with a very short single lane due to work in progress. The queues on the first day set records at Luton as they reached the M1 spur for the first time on a non snow day. The locals were up in arms as the local roads also ground to a halt.

On the Monday the airport management, who were in a state of shock at what had happened, held an emergency meeting and introduced measures including mobile electric road signs directing traffic to free drop offs at the medium and long term car parks. The measures including others brought in had some effect but the school holiday period last year was a disaster.

This year it is better but with queues still reaching the A1081 during the morning peak let's just say the CTA capacity has not lived up to expectations and would have been modified this winter even if the new rail link wasn't going in.
