Also having a hard time getting the computer number from the DGCA, currently stuck with the 10+2 marksheet verification. Its been almost 30 years since I finished that and moved out of Mumbai, and now I have no idea where to get the marksheets verified
. I did find
eMarkSheet-A web portal for online verification of statement of marks and certificate for SSC and HSC (Maharashtra) but am pretty sure the DGCA will not accept everified docs. If anyone provide some info, I'd be eternally grateful.

Take a look at this officially published list of study materials from the DGCA:

That list does not mean you have to refer to everything on it. Generally you would be better off with RK Bali and IC Joshi. Those are the recommended titles for CPL but work just as well for PPL as well. I've no personal experience with "From the ground up" so cannot really speak to that.
About your marksheet verification, if you were in Mumbai for your High School then your best option is the e-marksheet. It will require you to fill out a form and pay a nominal fee and ask for the reason of request. I think (not entirely sure) it will then mail you or whichever address mentioned on form the actual verification. That's how it works for CBSE boards. There is no harm in trying it out, I say go for it.
