There is a setting that may be missing. If you go into:
Account Settings (will have to check on a Mac the exact location of this),
navigate to
Change Account (this is where you enter your name, email address, password, Incoming and Outgoing mail server,
click on the
More Settings button,
click the
Outgoing Server tab,
put a check in the
My outgoing server (SMTP )requires authentication,
make sure the option
Use same settings as my incoming mail server is selected.
