I haven't read "The Cruel Sea" for a long time either. As I recall, the notional conversation was between a Russian security type and either Lockhart or Ericson. It took place at Archangel or Murmansk and the word in the book was "damn". The force and effect are the same though. I don't remember the scene being in the excellent movie.
After an excellent landing you can use the airplane again!
