I suspect you are right, it would be too expensive to maintain the facilities for the few days. I'm not knocking the airport for clearly making an economic judgement call. By the same token though, if that investment isn't made, they can't expect Jo Public to take the risk during the worst of the winter when an alternative is just a short drive away.
