As mentioned earlier in this thread...
.....Scotland joining England and Wales didn't give rise to 'The United Kingdom', that title not appearing until the Kingdom of Ireland became part of the union in 1801 (94 years later). Given Irish independence didn't lead to 'The United Kingdom' ceasing to be I'm not sure why Scotland leaving should either, what with a union of historic Kingdoms still existing with or without them.
For added information, prior to 1801 England/Scotland/Wales were known as the 'Kingdom of Great Britain'.
