Lee Baker Street and Dannyboy, you apparently have no understanding of aircraft "performance". Every take off has to be calculated to the runway details, present weather and aircraft weight. All airlines will plan to reduce thrust to the minimum for a departure, which on a shortish runway like LTN means that the aircraft will be able to accelerate, lose an engine and stop within the runway distance with a significant safety margin to spare. If we go from the intersection to avoid delays, it means we go with more thrust to compensate by having greater acceleration, but will still stop at exactly the same point as a full length departure with less thrust. Now, here's the interesting bit, so pay attention: if we have got to the same V1 point at the same speed but have a higher thrust setting for short field performance, then our single engine climb gradient will be higher than that of the full-length departures. So, margins are the same for the rejected take off, but bigger for the go case. Now add the opportunity to backtrack if the approach is clear with the short field performance and you have huge margins. Still think it's an issue?

Oh, how a free press is a wonderful thing for the uninformed...
