I rang Virgin earlier this evening and they explained the situation.
Those idiots who kept clicking 'reply' on their iToys clogged up the e-mail system, as did those who abused the situation with attempts to advertise their goods or services. Most ended up in spam folders; however, others whose stupid e-mails made it to the inbox were deemed to be spammers - so may have fun trying to recover their e-mail systems.
If people had simply deleted the problematic e-mails, the situation would have been resolved rather quicker....
