During my recent passages through the airport, that WH Smith's has been shut, but the seating area has been full with people standing waiting for the gates to be shown on the screen. That increased usage would suggest to me that regular pax want less of the retail/catering/drinking experience, because those areas have been very empty when the "basement" was full.
