you could probably have justified a decent runway extension by 1978 - but the owners weren't interested in spending cash on building something that might in any way divert traffic from LGW & LHR
ABZ would have been much better in the hands of the local authority (and I say that knowing just what a bunch of turkeys THEY have been over the years)
