Changing planes at any of the New York airports is as much of a nightmare as changing at the London ones. There is, though, no shortage of hub airports elsewhere in North America that can get one to one's destination with a lot less hassle. A direct service to one of them would be far preferable.
However, it's not going to happen from Newcastle any time soon.
