In the good old days, QF had a warning system (pre-dated the BA encounter with Mt Galunggung) that not only included all the state sources, but paid a small retainer to locals (usually Ausaid school teachers) to ring ops. in Sydney as soon as there was local volcanic activity.
There were examples of aircraft in flight getting warnings within 30 minutes of a local eruption in Indonesia, and hours to days before any "official" notifications.
Does this still exist?
Going forward, this type of capital and labour-intensive activity is not encompassed by any of the pillars that support our transformation strategy going forward, and in the interests of enhancing our world's best practice safety excellence, it has been discontinued going forward.
