Still no decision regarding the LTN planning application to increase pax numbers by 50% - the councillors are still deliberating as we speak. Look East report however that any decision in favour would still evoke an inevitable escalation to Eric Pickles.
This is a fair medium; a compromise. The airport has made all the correct noises - being a good neighbour; building sustainably and sensibly unlike the cancelled plans from mid-2000s.
Luton is one of the best located airports in the country; potentially it could've been a front runner for a Heathrow replacement, however they've shown no appetite to do this. It wouldn't work without serious financial investment and potentially would change the face of the whole town.
That said, after this expansion gets approved, what happens when the airport is full again? Does it stagnate forever? Are there any potential options to expand even further?
