In the USA, punishment will be up the Chief Pilot, with possible unofficial input from the FAA. More often than not, it will be a few weeks on the beach, and then a return to duty with nothing further.
If the CP is a real horse's rear, it will be termination, but I've only heard of that once, in the case of NorthWest Airlines landing in Brussels instead of Frankfurt.
It's a classic, even an easy mistake, done many times before, like the gear-up landing.
I've had the pleasure of saying, a few times in my life, "Weren't you the one that said you'd never ever make that mistake?"
