There was a recent fairly well publicised incident where an aircraft made a missed approach at both ends of a very long runway (or at least dismissed the notion of the 2nd approach ? ) due to finding the tailwind out of company limits, but within the manufacturers limits.

A decision was made to divert & the aircraft landed with a bit less than final reserve fuel.

Without wishing to be a Monday morning quarterback, I would say this displays what you are referring to . . . . . it is called experience & airmanship. Sometimes the small transgression may be preferable to taking a much greater risk. Only experience/judgement (or relative lack of) will influence your decision, good or bad.
