Thanks chaps,did a bit more googleing last night,apparently it is a common problem,new set sets itself up works fine for a while then ceases to talk to the internet,various solutions suggested.
As for the ip thing apparently we all have two ip addresses a public one and a private one,not sure what that was all about,so the wifi hub has a different one from the puter itself,err I think.
The general concensus seems to be that wireless connected telly internet is not very good anyway direct connection with a good honest length of copper cable with a ethernet plug on each end being better.
Thanks anyway,one shall recommend he gets the bloke out from Comet to fettle the buggah.
