Barnstormer I think you missed a crucial point in your response. With your licence to hold a specified firearm I would expect that that weapon is recorded by serial, the amount of ammunition you have is specified (?), and you are required to keep the weapon in an approved and secured container that has been inspected by the police. I think I am correct in general terms.
Nightingale had an unregistered weapon, an unspecified quantity of ammunition (later counted) and kept it in an insecure container in a non-approved location.
Chalk and cheese.
If your weapon was connected to a crime scene then the audit trail would start with you.
If Nightingale's weapon was found the trail would start with Glock, go to Iraq, and possibly come to a deadend in Basra. We know he said it was a presentation piece; was that ever proven?
