Boeing is stealing the low-capacity widebody from Airbus with the 787, whereas Airbus is now biting a big chunk out of the 777 hunting grounds with the A350.
Rewind 10 years, with the A330 and the 777, and things were exactly the opposite. It's a cyclical thing. Neither A nor B can have a top of the line product offering for each segment at any given time.
I'm not crying for any of them. Their salesmen will get a bigger bonus than ours again...
