Basically you would be better off doing your upgrade with which ever airline you did your MPL for. Once you have a couple of thousand hours in the left seat look at moving on, licence conversion will be far less problematic then.
Don't just restrict your sights to Australia, Asia and the Middle East is where the growth is. No shortage of A320 Captains with 3500 TOTAL time over here.
